The arrival of Miguel Angel Lotina in the summer of 2007 has meant the return to the 'old' 4-2-3-1 of Irureta, a figure that gave incredible results on the past. But from time to time, the Basque trainer uses a 4-4-2 system, specially when his team is losing the games and searching to score quickly.
Aouate is the usual starting goalkeeper. His backup is Uruguayan international Munúa. A defensive line of four players in front of the Israeli keeper. This defensive system has not changed too much since Irureta's era although the names are different. Central defender Albert Lopo and the Argentinean international Fabricio Coloccini are the normal starters, but an injury left out Lopo and his place started to be covered by a Fabril's youngster: Adrián López'Piscu'. The back-ups for this position Pablo Amo and Aythami Artiles. The right-back position is for Manuel Pablo and his replacement is Antonio Barragán, while the left side is territory for Filipe Luis, a Brazilian that has covered the exit of Capdevila. From time to time, Manuel Pablo covers the left-back, at least it was like that at the start of the season 2007/2008.
In midfield there's a clear division between the defensive and offensive. The two defensive midfielders, the 'pivots', are usually Sergio and Julian De Guzman. The alternative is utility-man Juan Rodríguez who can also perform on the right wing. Youngster Antonio Tomás also performs in this function, but he hardly has a chance. The offensive work in midfield consists of the left and right winger, Guardado is the left winger in the squad and one of the bigger hopes for the future, while the right is a disputed place between three players: Angel Lafita, Cristian Hidalgo and Pablo Alvarez.
The striker position is probably the most disputed place in the squad, that's because Depor has six strikers: Rodolfo Bodipo, Sebastián Taborda, Adrían, Xisco, Rubén Castro and Riki. This last one also performs as a right winger.
Finally, the figure of the playmaker should be a reserved mission for Juan Carlos Valerón. Unfortunately the Canarian playmaker has been injured and the job is now for Joan Verdú, a Catalan youngster that has made good games in this position.
