Well, I remember him because he scored twice against us in one of his first matches.

He isn't a goal scorer by the way. Solid defensive midfielder, a nice addition for any team, but surely it isn't worth the 40 million Euros you are paying for the guy.

that 40 M EUR is Depor's yearly budget, and I suppose a budget for 8-10 monthes in case of Athletic... they could hire a new coach from that for example.

As we all know about the Atletic basque players policy, this can be seen as a huge blow for the team. 40M is a big ammount of money, but what can Atletic do now. They will lack a lot of quality this year, and probably even attack wise if they loose Llorente.

They relied heavily on Martinez, even if they want to invest 20 or 30M in new signings, where will they get a basque of similar qualities? I perfectly understand Atletic's reluctance to sell him and it was only this riddiulus ammount of money that persueded them.
I don't know, maybe was it even a buy-out clause?

I just checked and 40M was indeed a buy out clause.
So Athletic had to let him go.
