Werder Bremen is a quality side and I would choose their style over Bayern's anytime. However they face serious problems and have failed, for the moment, to provide adequate solutions. Most of all I would outline:

1. Young and inexperienced defensive line, not particularly competitive as a unit. They miss Ismael a lot, while Pasanen is injured and GK is not always reliable. Plus their coach adopts a rather open formation, with one DMC (usually Bauman). As a norm, they will score a lot (their attacking duo is the most productive in Europe so far, I think) but also concede, which is obvious in their statistics. While their ability to create dangerous situations up front is outstanding, sometimes they don't seem that solid / balanced. I think it was Frings who has recently criticised publicly this feature?

2. Lack of depth at the bench. Missing reliable alternatives, it becomes complicated in occasions when the schedule is tight, playing 3 matches per week. The starting lineup will not change so it is usual for them to face fatigue after 60-70 minute. This situation was more than obvious recently, when they lost in Athens against Panathinaikos. They should have turned the match but since they missed several clear opportunities, they suffered in the last quarter of the game...

NEURURER WON'T BE THE NEW COACH OF NÜRNBERG

Peter Neururer has dropped out of the running to be the new Nurnberg coach.

Nurnberg are looking for a successor to Wolfgang Wolf, who was fired last week, but after holding initial talks with the duo, Nurnberg’s managing director Martin Bader had to reveal that the club have been forced to look elsewhere.

With Nurnberg’s fans protesting against the signing of Matthaus — a legend of Nurnberg's arch-rivals Bayern Munich — Bader admitted that the former German international will stay in charge of Hungary.

“At the end of the day the criticism was too much and in a desperate situation like ours, we need to have the fans on our side,” stressed Bader.

Former Bochum boss Neururer has, meanwhile, also turned down the job after watching the club in action over the weekend.

Guided by interim boss Dieter Lieberwirth a helpless Nurnberg suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Stuttgart and remain bottom of Die Bundesliga, already four points adrift of safety.

“Mr Neururer told us that he is no longer interested as he feels that he won’t be able to help us,” explained Bader.

Former Leverkusen and Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoller and ex-Dortmund and Stuttgart boss Matthias Sammer are the names mentioned most frequently around the Frankenstadion, but it remains to be seen if they are ready to take the FCN hot seat.

Nürnberg appoint Meyer

FC Nürnberg have appointed veteran coach Hans Meyer to replace Wolfgang Wolf.

The 63-year-old has agreed a contract at the Frankenstadion until the end of the season and will be officially presented on Wednesday.

Meyer, who led Borussia Mönchengladbach back into the top flight in 2001, has been trusted with the job of guiding the rock-bottom Bavarian outfit out of relegation trouble after a terrible start to the season.

FCN sport director Martin Bader has turned to Meyer after talks with both Lothar Matthaus and Peter Neururer broke down over the past week.

Bader was part of the Hertha Berlin management team when Meyer saved the capital city club from a similar predicament in the spring of 2004.

Hannover sack Lienen

Hannover have sacked coach Ewald Lienen following a series of disappointing results.

The Bundesliga outfit confirmed the news on Wednesday after a crisis meeting between club bosses and Lienen on Tuesday evening.

A statement released by the club said that Hannover now expected "new impulses for the sporting future of the team through a different coach" and thanked Lienen and his assistant Michael Frontzeck for their work.

Lienen joined Hannover in March 2004, but a disappointing start the season, despite substantial summer investment in the transfer market, finally led to the 51-year-old's dismissal.

The Reds are currently 13th in the Bundesliga table with just two wins from their first 12 games.

Hannover 96 have appointed Peter Neururer as their new coach. He promoted to the Bundesliga in 2002 with his former club VfL Bochum, only 2 years later he earned a spot in the UEFA-Cup with them. But Bochum relegated in 2004/05 and Neururer resigned.
After being away from football for over 3 months he now returns to the Bundesliga. "3 1/2 months without football are enough. I already got onto my family's nerves. Only motorcycling and playing golf doesn't fill the day, football is my life", he sais.
The 96ers only occupy the 13th spot this season, although they spent a lot of money on new players like German international Thomas Brdaric before the season. That was the reason for them to sack Ewald Lienen, who had achieved a remarkable 10th spot with a rather poor squad last season.
After Wolf and Lienen being sacked and Meyer being appointed as new manager the signing of Neururer is already the 4th big headline here in Germany this week.

Ballack offer withdrawn

The likelihood of Michael Ballack staying with Bayern Munich has receded after the Bavarian giants withdrew their contract offer for the midfielder.

The gifted Germany international playmaker is out of contract with the Allianz Arena outfit next summer and Bayern were keen to retain his services, despite setting a deadline for a decision on his future.

At the club's AGM, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the club have opted to take their offer off the table.

"We officially withdrew our offer today," confirmed Rummenigge.

The news is likely to alert Spanish giants Real Madrid and Premiership outfit Manchester United, although Bayern have not given up hope of retaining Ballack.

"It does not necessarily mean that Michael will leave us but I say, point blank, that we will immediately sound out the market to look for a replacement," he added.

Magath hopeful over Ballack

Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath remains confident Michael Ballack with stay at the club.

Ballack's future at Bayern has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, with the player's current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Speculation intensified that Ballack would leave the German champions on Monday when Bayern withdrew their contract offer to the midfielder.

Ballack's agent has admitted a number of foreign sides have expressed an interest in the goalscoring midfielder, who can open talks with interested suitors in January.

Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan and Internazionale are all thought to be keen on Ballack, but Magath is hopeful that the German international will remain at Bayern.

"I believe he's going to stay with us anyway," Magath said.

Bayern's sporting director Uli Hoeness also believes Ballack could well stay at the club.

"For me, the final word hasn't been spoken yet," Hoeness told German radio.

"I can well imagine Michael will stay with Bayern. But one thing is clear. From now on, the talks will be led by us and not him."
