![]() ORIGIN-1949 ARTICLE: http://www.deportivo-la-coruna.com/page.php?cid=9
1902. José María Abalo Abad, who had been studying in London, came back to A Coruña with an university degree... and a new sport, that he would introduce in the town. and creating a team in 1903, named "Corunna FC", playing in the bull ring. The first "serious" match of football disputed in the town was in 1904, when a local team named Corunna FC faced with the crew of the British ship "Diligent". Corunna Foot-ball Club (yellow and black striped shirt, white shorts) was formed in 1903, and its name would change to Coruña FC, later Real Club Coruña, but its level was decreasing and finally disappeared a few decades later. During the first years, it was the big archrival of Deportivo. 1906. The history of our Club begins this year, in which the "Club Deportivo de la Sala Calvet", was formally constituted in a prestigious Gymnasium of the Galera Street, in the heart of the city. Sala Calvet was, in the last years of the 19th century and the first of the 20th, the most important A Coruña sporting center: a gym where, under the direction of Federico Fernández Amos Calvet, was taught from the technique necessary to fight a duel to sword, saber or foil (the specialities of the founder), to other sports like trainera races, cycling, athletics, running, jumps and other gymnastics specialties of the time. In the city of A Coruña, who wanted to apply the famous "mens sana in corpore sano" should go to the Sala Calvet. It's clear, therefore, that among the first footballers, probably should be large numbers of students/members of Sala Calvet. It was precisely in this place, the key fact for the creation of which in time would be the RC Deportivo. One day, some footballers of Coruña FC, students/members of Sala Calvet, discussed with the athletes on the excellence of their respective sports. As the argument/discussion escalated, and started bets, it was agreed to move it to the «field of honor»: athletes and footballers would face in two matches of football. The expectation was immense. The surprising result: the athletes won the first meeting (2-1) and tied the second (1-1), and the enthusiasm was such that on March 2nd, 1906, founded the Club Deportivo de la Sala Calvet. The Real Club Deportivo was born, although not exactly with the current name yet, until 1912, when the name of the club was changed, adding to RC Deportivo the name of the city instead Sala Calvet, the name of the gym. Deportivo was a club opened to all classes, while his rival Corunna FC was much more related with the rich class. There would be a big rivalry between both teams for several years. Of course, there were also friendly matches vs teams of other cities, like Vigo, Ferrol, Pontevedra, and later some regional competitions. 1910, our 1st official trophy. After winning the provincial championship, 1-0 vs Coruña FC and 5-0 to Sporting Vigo, we qualified for the Spanish Championship in Madrid. We played vs Español de Madrid (now disappeared, but competed with Madrid and Atletico by then). We surprised everybody, and the match was 0-0, but in the last minute, when our GK De LLano was going to block a shot, suddenly the bar fell down over his head, and the ball ended entering slowly inside the goal. Inexplicably the goal was given as valid, things that happened in that age, and we lost 1-0. Our 2nd game, vs Barcelona. But the rivals didn't arrived at time for the match. The Spanish Federation was going to disqualified the catalans and give the win for us, which automatically would have given the runner-up title to Deportivo. But the spirit of football in those days was very different from today, and our club, like gentlemen, prefered to wait for the catalans to play the game. Barcelona finally arrived, and were very thankful for Deportivo gesture, but then had no mercy and showed their experience and superiority winning 5-0, passing to the final, which they won 3-2 vs Español de Madrid. But Deportivo fair play had a reward. The Spanish Federation equalized our classification with Español de Madrid, runners-up, and also awarded with 11 silver medals, plus a grant of 500 pesetas (3 euros). Only 4 years after the foundation, and Deportivo already was among the most important clubs. Last edited by Blue_Nation : 22-07-2013 at 23:40. |

![]() 1914-18, with the big rivalry between RC Deportivo and Coruña CF increasing, the president of Deportivo decided not to play more matches against "that other team of the city". Some people understood it was justified, but most of the people protested, as those derbies were highly expected. The players also disagreed with the managers, so there was a breakup/division in the club, the players left the president alone and formed Deportivo Autentico CF, which unofficially represented our club and still playing matches, including hot derbies vs Coruña CF and local competitions. Meanwhile, RC Deportivo had president, directors, but no players... so no matches. Finally this weird situation was fixed in the beginning of 1918, when RC Deportivo and Deportivo Autentico became only one club again.
1923. In Vigo, the two archrivals of the town, Fortuna FC and Vigo Sporting, decided to join. That caused angry reactions in some fans of both teams, and also among some players. Some of them didn't want to join the new club, and decided to go. 4 players left Celta and signed for Deportivo: Ramón González, Luis Otero, Chiarroni and Isidro. Ramón González was a great striker from A Coruña, he had played in Fabril and Deportivo 1917-1918 before join the Real Vigo Sporting, and back with us since 1923 he was probably our most important player next seasons. With him, escaping from the recently created RC Celta, also came Chiarroni, from Vigo, striker too, Isidro, GK, from Pontevedra, same city than Luis Otero, a fantastic defender who had been silver medal in 1920 Olympic Games and was very popular, a star by the time. It's told that specially Luis Otero signing was the start of the big rivalry between Celta and Deportivo. Celta reacted protesting to the galician federation, accusing the players of professionalism and Deportivo of bribing. The Galician Federation decided to not allow the players to play and disqualify Deportivo from the 1923/24 galician championship. In 1924/25 the Federation finally allowed Deportivo to compete again, and also the players. In 1924, with that tense athmosphere, the 1st derby ever, at the Riazor, with Ramón González, Luis Otero and Chiarroni already wearing the blue&white, Deportivo won vs Celta 3-0. Our team that day was: Mulero; Luis Otero, Abelardo; José María, Pombo, Vasco; Leonardo, Ramón González, Chiarroni, Pereira, Alonso. 1936-1939, Spanish Civil War. Obviously, La Liga stopped with the war, although there were some matches and local competitions, and didn't restart until 1939/40. Some leftish Depor players were killed/executed, like Bebel García or Lemos. Other players like Trigo or Layas were very close to execution, but miraculously were able to escape from it. Cachán, who was captured by the police, had 2 options: prison or fight with the Legion. He chose the 2nd and would die in Oviedo. Some other players were called to participate in the war, and would come back later. |

![]() In 1939/40, with La liga restarted, Deportivo finished 1st in Segunda, with Juan Acuña and Chacho as big stars, but had to play the promotion vs Celta, second last in Primera.
The match was played at the Chamartín (now Bernabeu) in Madrid. 1 of our players (Cela) was injured in minute 15, no subs by then, so we played almost with 10 the rest of the match. Even that, we played better, but were not accurate in the last meters. 4 minutes before the end, Celta scored the 0-1 and stayed in 1ª. We had to wait 1 year more (1940/1941) to get finally the promotion to Primera, for the 1st time in our history. We were 2nd this time, and played the promotion match vs Murcia, this time at Vallecas stadium, in Madrid. After losing 0-1 in the 1st half, 1-1 scored by Chacho in minute 32 of 2nd half, and it was needed an extra-time. 5 minutes of the 1st half of extension and Guimeráns scored the 2nd goal for us. Since then, Murcia pressed constantly, but legendary GK Juan Acuña was there with fantastic saves, and Deportivo won 2-1, getting the promotion to the highest category for the 1st time in our history. This was the team of the 1st promotion: http://cromosdeldepor.blogspot.com.e...-division.html In 1941/42 we were 4th, the best debuter team in Primera ever. After this great result, the club decided to build a new stadium at Riazor, finally inaugurated in 1944. 1947/26/01.The Riazor stadium's first video images I could find, from the game Deportivo de la Coruña vs San Lorenzo Almagro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS2lJ6lzQpo 1947/06/22. Copa Final, between Real Madrid and Espanyol (Highlights from minute 0:30 to 1:58) http://www.rtve.es/filmoteca/no-do/not-234/1467234/ The 1st relegation from Primera was in 1944/45, next season promotion, then relegation, and then promotion again in 1947/48. In 1948/49 we managed to stay, ending 10th. Last edited by Blue_Nation : 19-05-2015 at 23:51. |

1949/50. 2nd position in Liga 1ª, we were champions for some minutes, but finally Atletico Madrid won the title. This was our team: http://cromosdeldepor.blogspot.com.e...s-de-liga.html This was the age of the "Orquesta Canaro", and the golden years of the club, until then. ![]() In 1973/74, things went even worse, and suffered relegation to 3ª (there was no 2ªB by then). Fortunately, it was only 1 season, 1974/75, finishing 1st and promoting to 2ª again.
The financial situation of the club these years was very bad, and getting worst. In 1979/80, Deportivo suffered relegation from 2ª again, this time to 2ªB, together with Celta, but both managed to came back together the next season 1980/81 to 2ª, where we played in 1981/82. I think it's from this year, 1981, my first memory of a match at the Riazor, a derby Depor 1 - Celta 1, but I was 5 and only remember a few images, and that the stadium was under renovation/rebuilding for the 1982 World Cup. The debt, of course, still increasing. 1982/83 SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1982-8313.html In 1982/83 we made a great season, with our midfielder Jose Luis as big star, top scorer of the category with 16 goals. The last matchday was at the Riazor vs Rayo Vallecano. All the city was ready for the big celebration of promotion, as only 1 point was enough, and Rayo played for nothing... I was there, at the stadium, only 6 years old but still remember the big disappointment. Rayo players had been paid by our rival Mallorca, and put an incredible effort in winning the game... Curiously, 4 Rayo players signed for Mallorca after that match and played with them the next season in Primera... Despite that "motivation" of the other team, also the referee had several mistakes, at least 2 clear penalties for us not given. When Rayo scored the 1st goal, in the 2nd half, the nerves began. And with Depor desperately searching for the tie, a counter attack and Rayo scored the 0-2. Although Ballesta (CB) scored the 1-2, it was imposible to get another goal, we finally lost the match, and a big sadness covered the stadium and all the city. 1983/05/22. Deportivo 1 - Rayo Vallecano 2. 1982/83, Liga 2ª, Matchday 38/38. MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=101973 It seems I suffered a lot in that match and was very nervous, so some old woman in the stand, worried about me, told to my parents: This boy can't come to the Riazor, he suffers too much... Since then, my parents never took me to the stadium again. So I didn't come back to Riazor until one of my uncles, who was a socio, started to invite me to some matches occasionally, a few years later. 1985/86 SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1985-8613.html After 2 average seasons (83/84, 84/85) in 1985/86 the promotion was very close again. This time the crucial match was away, at Oviedo. A lot of deportivistas traveled there, but unfortunately just to see a scandalous robbery by the referee. A completely undeserved red card to our defender Silvi in minute 32, a penalty for Oviedo that it wasn't at all... We finally lost 1-0 and the promotion dream vanished again. 1986/05/11. Oviedo 1 - Deportivo 0. 1985-86, Liga 2ª, matchday 37/38. MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103161 Last edited by Blue_Nation : 22-07-2013 at 23:45. |

SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1986-8713.html The season 1986/87 we ended 2nd in La Liga, after the 34 matchdays, but somebody had the stupid idea of a play off league to promotion (only happened that year) and we finally couldn't reach the promotion, again. 1986/11/16. Valencia 3 - Deportivo 1. Liga, M 14/34. HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrm...t#.UbPEDNJFV2A MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103321 1987/01/10. Deportivo 2 - Castellon 0. The oldest Depor full match available. MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103397 FULL MATCH: http://pasouoquepasou.crtvg.es/conte...na-tvg-en-1986 1987/03/22. Celta 2 - Deportivo 0. M 32/34. Baltazar's goal. HIGHLIGHTS: http://historiadoceltadevigo.net/ind...142&Itemid=218 MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103482 1987/05/24. Deportivo 1 - Sestao 2. M 6/10, promotion play-off league HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgTGbTDsKPc MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103558 1987/06/06. Deportivo 0 - Celta 1, M 8/10, promotion play off league. MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103575 FULL MATCH: http://historiadoceltadevigo.net/ind...142&Itemid=218 After our bad start of the play-off league, a very decisive match was played at the Riazor vs Celta, with a tense athmosphere. Celta was 1 point ahead of us. Our last hopes depended on that result, and again another big robbery, in our face. A Celta's player, Alvelo, suffered a fault (or more accurately, he dived) about 1 meter out of the area and the referee (Díaz Vega) incredibly gave a penalty kick for them, at the end of the 1st half. Of course, they scored the goal, by their big star top scorer brazilian Baltazar, who later would play in Atletico Madrid and would be Pichichi of Primera. But that strange penalty was the detonating/booster in the stands, and there were a lot of incidents, specially at the half time, with fights between fans of both teams (they were mixed in the stands by then) and also with the police.... We finally lost the match and our chances of promotion, and Celta ascended to Primera. It caused that the rivalry between Depor-Celta and A Coruña-Vigo increased hugely. Here's a video with some images of those incidents at Riazor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ev9dkwoZhU It's in this context, some time later, in 1987 yet, when the "Riazor Blues" are born. SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1987-8813.html This season Jose Luis is sold to Betis for 25M ptas (150,000 euros). A tragic event in the pre-season, our defender Sagarzazu, recently signed from Primera, Real Sociedad, called to be an important player here, died suddenly in the bus traveling with the team to a friendly match, which was very shocking for the players, club and fans. The results were very bad since the beginning, and suffered a lot, until the last moment, to save the category, and maybe the existence... As only positive things, several Fabril players debuted with Depor in this season. Among them, a young Jose Ramón, and also later his younger brother, Fran. We had 3 coaches that season, the last one Arsenio Iglesias, that came back to the bench to save the club from relegation. 1988/04/24. Deportivo 2 - Oviedo 2. Liga 2ª, M 34/38 HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4-ADFFKbqo MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103934 1988/05/22. Deportivo 1 - Racing Santander 0. Liga 2ª, M 38/38 MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=103971 The very important Vicente Celeiro's goal, just in the last minute of the last match of season 1987/88, saving the club from relegation to 2B, and maybe disolution, due to the big debt we had by then... It was a miracle. Alba, Racing's GK, had blocked and saved a lot of chances. It seemed completely impossible to score. Minute 90 surpassed, and at the end of the added time, when the ref was going to whistle the end, Vicente's goal. A crucial goal that changed our history. VICENTE'S GOAL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLiD2nmXCsU As a curiosity, in the euphoria of the celebration, Vicente threw his shirt to the recently created Riazor Blues... so couldn't play the last seconds of the game, without shirt, and had to see it from the bench, with our coach, legendary Arsenio, becoming temporally mad with him because of leaving us with only 10 men. I wasn't at the stadium, but still remember the moment. My parents and I were on the road to A Coruña, travelling by car from oury native village after the weekend, and were hearing the matches through the radio. Only a few minutes remaining to the end of the match, so my dad stopped the car to listen the last minutes carefully. The radio had only national channels by then, so they made connections with all matches. As the time passed, and we heared the FT in most of the stadiums, my parents started to comment: Nothing. No way. We are going to 2ªB. Surely the match has already finished. Let's see what happens, but with the relegation to 2ªB... maybe the club is going to disappear... I was in the back seat, with my illusions broken again, close to the tears, just trying to imagine how hard it would be to see Depor playing at 2ªB, or much worse, disappeared... Completely dived in those sad and dark thoughts , when suddenly... Goooooooal! Goooooooal! Deportivo at the Riazor! In the last second, Vicente had scored! Althgough the club saved the category, the situation still being critical. The president had resignated, there should had been elections in the summer, but there were no candidates... Searching for a solution, many people pressured Lendoiro, much younger and thinner by then, admired in the town for his successes with Liceo HC, so he was practically forced to present. Many people considered him like the only person that could revitalize the club in that moment. He joined a lot of signings, and as there was no more candidates, he became president. 1988-1993 ARTICLE: http://www.deportivo-la-coruna.com/page.php?cid=205 SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1988-8913.html Not a bad season in Liga, 10th, at least we didn't suffer like previous year. At winter time, the uncle who used to invite me to some matches, gave me a free ticket for childs, so I could start to go to most of the matches at the Riazor. 1988/10/16. Mallorca 1 - Deportivo 0. Liga 2ª, M 7/38. As a curiosity, in Mallorca played Stojadinovic, that 2 years later would play for Depor and would be the hero of the promotion. HIGHLIGHTS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGVNZka_FE0 MATCH STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/p/p.php?id=104064 This was a fantastic season to remember in Copa del Rey. We were the revelation team, and although being in 2ª eliminated several 1ª squads, and reached semifinals vs Valladolid. We won here, 1-0, and even deserved a better result. But in Zorrila, with more than 3,000 deportivistas there, the 2nd leg was one of the biggest robberies I remember in football. Very unfair, but were eliminated. We knew a 2ª team could not reach the final, specially when it meant automathically the ticket to Europe, CWC, as the rival in the Final was Madrid, the Liga champion. Since then, Fernando Hierro, Valladolid CB by then, was always veeery hated at the Riazor, after many agressions and criminal faults he did, specially one to a young Fran. Unfortunately, he was not the only one, and Ramon had to leave injured, and go to the hospital to receive 25 suture stitches in his leg, after a criminal tackling by a Pucela's player, Patri, but referee looked to other place and didn't whistle anything... Finally, the crucial goal, 1-0 that equalized the eliminatory, at minute 82, after a throw-in that should be for us, but ref gave to them. Valladolid player committed fault in the throw-in, as his feet weren't out of the pitch. Then, several consecutive faults, with our defenders pushed and holded, and finally the ball goes to a player, who scores helped with his hand... and the ref, of course, allowed everything... In the extra time, Valladolid scored the 2-0, in clear offside again. Soriano Aladren was the ref, never forgotten... There were also some incidents in the stands. This match was the start of the rivalry/hate with Valladolid/Pucela. Qualifying for promotion was considered like a prize, because it was unexpected for us to be really fighting for it. This was my also 1st season as a socio. After going to most of matches last year, my uncle and the good results in the school helped me to convince my parents, and in the summer of 1989 I became officially a socio. 1990/05/20. SQUAD AND STATISTICS: http://www.bdfutbol.com/en/t/t1990-9113.html After being so close last season, the club made several signings to reinforce the team. We had specially many basque players in our squad, 7 in that season, Yosu, Sabín Bilbao, Albístegui, Aspiazu, Mújika, Santi Francés and Uralde, plus 2 south american with basque origin, Lasarte and Albis. The times of Eusko Depor. Also 3 balkan players arrived that season, Kanatlarovski, Stojadinovic (hero of the promotion) and for the last matches arrived a young and unknown Miroslav Djuckic, a 25 years old player, who had worked as a bulldozer driver in his country until 21, when he started to play football seriously. The talent, class, cold blood, tecnique and fantastic performance showed in his debut was a big surprise for everybody and from there onwards, became an undisputed starter. Copa 1990/91 1991/02/06. Only if we stayed in 1ª they will come. After winning the promotion, 2 brazilian Mauro Silva (1,2M) and Bebeto(1,5M), come to the club, and our history will change. Super Depor was coming.
