Default FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2005

FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2005 is currently taking place on Copacabana beaches in Brazil.

Amusing spectacle! I've never seen this kind of sport before. It's quite different from ordinary football, futsal or any other sport. The field is much less so (taking into account number of players) goals may be scored from any point. Technique is not such important due to the sand. At the same time work with a ball is very important in air. Good thing is lower number of injuries because of absence of boots (Sorry for 3 'of's in a row. For 5 minutes I was thinking how to fix this sentence but I had no idea).

Bad things are low speed of the game (the reason is sand) and low number of quality teams in the world (strict weather requirements).

Generally I liked this sport. BTW the most interesting part of the Cup starts. Playoffs.

Quarter-finals (to be played on Thursday)
France - Spain
Portugal - Ukraine
Uruguay - Japan
Brazil - Argentina

I don't know if this topic should be at Deportivo's forum
You know who's the star of the Spanish team? Amarelle
You know who has been chosen earlier as best player of the world? Amarelle
You know who has been one of the top scorers at every championship? Amarelle

Amarelle is Galician and he played football earlier in his career. Yep, he played for Depor u-18 (Dani Mallo, Padín...) giving the youngsters of Depor his one and only National title, the U-18 National Cup. Of course, after winning the title he was fired.

BTW, the Spanish national team of Beach volley also counts with a former Deportivo U-18 player, though I can't remember his name right now.

France - Spain 7:4

Wow! Eric Cantona is a captain of France!
Spain were better in the ending but it was too late.

Portugal - Ukraine 5:3

Ukraine was good but not enough to beat European Brazilians.

Uruguay - Japan 3:4

Japan was invited to the Cup without qualification games. Just for beach soccer popularization in Asia. And now they will play semifinal!!!

Brazil - Argentina 9:3

In this type of football this classic derby is not a close contest.

Semifinals

France - Japan
Brazil - Portugal

Cantona's France have won...

Cantona's men rule beach

From correspondents in rio de Janeiro
May 16, 2005

FRANCE, coached by former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona, won FIFA's inaugural beach soccer World Cup today, beating Portugal on penalties.

France won 1-0 in a sudden-death penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw after extra-time at the temporary arena built on Copacabana beach for the week-long event.

"I thought the best two teams were in the final and overall I thought we deserved to win the tournament," said Cantona, who was officially player-coach, but made only one appearance on the sand in the first-round match with Argentina.

France led 3-1 with only five minutes to play but Portugal, semi-final conqueror of host and favourite Brazil, levelled with two late goals, the second with only eight seconds on the clock in the third and final period of normal time.

There was no further scoring in the three-minute extra time period and France claimed the trophy when Portugal's first penalty attempt hit the bar.

Unfortunately I couldn't watch semifinals. Only the overtime of Brazil-Portugal. Such a close game!!! 5-5 after 3 periods. Two free kicks in overtime caused two goals. Brazilians were very close to loss but 14 seconds before the end they equalized. 6-6.

The Brazilians were unlucky in the penalty kicks. Jorginho shot the post and caused 1-2 loss on penalties.

Funny thing. Russian commentators didn't know the regulations. They thought that teams must shoot 5 kicks but really they play till the first missed penalty kick. So after the second kick (Jorginho missed, Alan scored) they were very surprised why Brazilians were so sad and Portuguese were so happy.

P.S. I watched final game today in the morning so I'll write some words later.

3rd place game

Japan - Brazil 2:11 (or more?)

Japan made a sensation on the first official world cup beeing in the top 4. If they beat Brazilians it would be too much! Japan started well, they scored the 1st goal. But then the class made itself know and Brazil started scoring every 3 minutes. I stopped watching the game when it was 2:11.

Final

Portugal - France 3:3, pen. 0:1

Fantastic match! France had to win in without any extra times or penalties (Mendy was very good scoring 2 goals) but Portuguese scored before 1,5 minutes till the end and equalized before 8 seconds till the final whistle. 0-0 drawin overtime and Alan's poor strike from the 1st penalty (a ball hits the bar). Too bad for European Brazilians. I was very sorry for them...
