Default 20 January 2008: Almería - Deportivo (pre-match comments) (Liga)

The first round of the Primera División now is over after 50% of the matches has been played. We now turn to face the same teams in the same order but in different stadiums.

On 26 August 2007 the following team played one of the worst matches this season so far at home against newly-promoted Almería (0-3): Aouate - Rodri, Lopo, Coloccini, Manuel Pablo - Guardado, Sergio, De Guzman, Riki, Cristian - Adrian. Lafita, Verdú and Taborda entered the match.

The team of next Sunday won't be radically different. Six out of eleven players were starters against Villarreal while Lopo and Manuel Pablo would have been if they had been fit. Only Aouate and Rodri are assured of not facing Almería again.

It's evident that Lotina's fate is at stake. The advantage of the current league remains that losing matches doesn't automatically mean that gaps in the table immediately become huge. But it does mean that other teams gain more and more advantage and there are less and less teams which feel really threatened and become too much distanced if we keep on losing. We don't need to win all next five matches. But 8 points out of 15 should be at least taken.

Most of all, the match at Almería is an indication of how we will do against our rivals. It's the 'perfect opportunity': Almería aren't star-plagued while Deportivo are in good form this season away from home. Meanwhile, Almería aren't very consistent at home:

Liga Almería-Espanyol 1-0
(Copa Almería-Levante 1-1)
Liga Almería-Getafe 0-2
Liga Almería-Valladolid 1-0
Liga Almería-Sevilla 1-0
Liga Almería-Atlético 0-0
Liga Almería-Zaragoza 0-1
Liga Almería-Osasuna 2-0
Liga Almería-Racing 0-1
Liga Almería-Mallorca 1-1
Liga Almería-Valencia 1-2

Goals are scarce in Almería this season: 14 goals in 10 matches neatly divided between the home side and the visitors. On one occasions Almería scored two goals, and on two occasions the visiting side scored two goals. Almería were denied scoring on four occasions, while the visitors were denied on five occasions.

Almería have won four matches at home (Espanyol, Valladolid, Sevilla) of which three out of the last four. There were two draws (Atlético, Mallorca) while four teams (Getafe, Zaragoza, Racing and Valencia) took the points away from Almería.

As usual, scoring one ore more goals will be crucial. If we look at Almería’s bright side, they have lost just one out of their five last home matches. But they only scored three goals in the last six matches….. Of course, opponents were denied too as there were five clean sheets in the last seven matches by Almería. Zaragoza scored a goal while Getafe scored two goals.

The curious thing is that only in two out of ten matches both home and visiting side scored at least one goal. This means that all visiting teams who scored at least one goal took something from Almería. This doesn’t apply completely to Almería, because they lost 1-2 against Valencia early in the season.

Statistics aren’t a guarantee for anything. But if Deportivo score at least one goal this Sunday, the chance of not losing is extremely high.

Hopefully we can see the return of some players (Lopo, Manuel Pablo, Adrian Lopez....) who were out injured this Sunday. Pablo Amo will be suspended.

Goods news is that one of their best players, left defender Mané (26, at the club since 2006), received his fifth yellow card against Espanyol (1-0) and is suspended for the Deportivo match. Mané and striker Negredo (six goals so far) are related to Juande's Tottenham Hotspur. I don’t know for sure about a suspension for another of their vital players, central defender Carlos García. He received his seventh of he season against Espanyol. Seven cards meant suspension for Madrid defender Sergio Ramos against Levante.

Mané and Carlos García are first and second of Almería list of playing minutes. Mané even scored two goals this season already. They are vital for one of Almería's strengths this season: their defence.

Leon you wrote only 3 of their 4 wins at home...
It is really (1 of ) the most important match of the season. If we go with a bad result to the next 4 similar games, it could cause a bad, or missing self-confidence, and also Lotina would be fired... A must WIN, not according to the powers, but to the tabella.

Thanks DepHun. Their fourth win was against Osasuna.

I see this match in a very simple way: it wouldn't require a miracle to keep a clean sheet against Almería. At the same time, with their defensive line-up problems and Depor's habit to score away from home, we should be able to score at least one goal.

I guess we will win 1-0, on a penalty by Sergio in the last minute, and Lotina keeps his job.

..Which is actually fine for me.

That's all i can say and hope for...

Almería’s line-up against Espanyol (1-0 win) was:

Goalkeeper: Diego Alves
Defence: Bruno, Carlos Garcia, Acasiete, Mané
Midfield: Soriano, Juanito, Felipe Melo, Crusat, Juanma Ortiz
Attack: Negredo

On came: Ortiz Bernal, Cisma and Uche.

Defender Mané will be out suspended for the Deportivo match. Carlos Garcia received his 7th card of the season and could get suspension (I don’t know the rules exactly). On the other hand, Corona and Pulido (Deportivo were heavily related to him one year ago) were out injured for the Espanyol match but have recovered. Both haven’t really been starters this season.

This could lead to the following team:
* Goalkeeper: Diego Alves (22, Brazil). It seems that he has taken the place of Cobeño (25, Sevilla) who was Almería’s starting goalkeeper, until he was send off at Betis (1-3 loss).
* Defenders: New Brazilian signing Guilherme could take the left position of Mané (suspended). Bruno (27, Spain) covers the other wing and Acasiete (30, Peru) remains in the centre. Either Pulido (28, Spain) or Carlos García (23, Spain) will take the remaining spot.
* Midfielders: Juanito (27, Spain), Juanma Ortiz (25, Spain), Felipe Melo (24, Brazil) and Crusat (25, Spain) will probably keep their place. Corona (26, Spain) could step in for Soriano (28, Spain).
* Attacker: Negredo (22, Spain)

Next to Deportivo, Almería are one of Spain’s youngest teams with almost all players below 30. As a consequence, many players haven't much experience in Primera. A large part of the their players is having their first or second season in Segunda. Besides, they’re quite ‘Spanish’, with at least seven Spaniards starting on Sunday.

Leon: unless rules have changed or memory fails me, it's like this: you get suspended after the 5th yellow card, but if you receive two in a game, and are thus sacked, you get a suspension in the next match, and those two yellow cards don't count for your running total for the season. So that player from RM that got suspended after his 7th card must have received two of them in a single game.

I don't think there's such a rule !!
it's a suspension each 5 yellow cards.

edit: Esteban, I guessed the same thing about the player with 7 cards

So, it's 5/10/15 cards meaning suspension? Those are huge numbers. Sergio Ramos indeed was send off in a match.
