Default 2 February 2008: Betis Sevilla - Deportivo (pre-match comments) (Liga)

This Saturday (22:00) there's the match with relegation rivals Betis Sevilla. They too, like Deportivo, seem to perform below expectations. But they're climbing away from danger fast after 14 points out of the last 7 matches. They are unbeaten at home for three consecutive matches:
* Betis Sevilla 1 - Recreativo 1
* Betis Sevilla 3 - Getafe 2
* Betis Sevilla 3 - Almería 1

Away from home they have been quite effective too:
* Espanyol 1 - Betis Sevilla 2
* Sevilla FC 3 - Betis Sevilla 0
* Valladolid 0 - Betis Sevilla 0
* Villarreal 0 - Betis Sevilla 1

This won't be easy at all!

Wow, nice to see we are going to play at 22:00 on Saturday, it means there is a big possibility to see the game. I think our objective for this game should be a win, of course draw won't be bad, but let's fight for 3 points, we really need it.

Beating Sevilla has much to do with silencing Argentinean striker Pavone (6 goals this season, one every 158 minutes) and experienced Brazilian striker Edu (5 goals this season, 54 in Primera). But they have a fully fit squad which is free of suspensions, like Deportivo have.

Did they move from Betis then?

Betis have found a bit of form lately and although we really could do with the 3 points this Saturday, I really don't think a draw would be that bad. Pavone has found some form lately after a fairly unimpressive start but for me, Edu is the one we really have to keep quiet.

I can't see this being a very highscoring game and as usual, the first goal will be crucial.

A draw would be fine for me too. We would close in the safe zone.

For me 3 points is the only option.

The top of the bottom half of the table seam to be performing and that gap is getting bigger. It was only a couple of weeks back when 10th was not that far away, now its 7 points - next week it will probaly be 10.

We may be 2 points from 4th bottom. However 3 from 5th and if these teams win a or gain further points at the weekend we are just making the job harder.

Betis are 5 points away and for now this is the team (I fell) we have to chatch.

We need to win this. First of all, it will prove that the Valladolid game wasn't just plain luck, we need to be able to repeat that performance, again and again if we wanna close that gap. Of course, this is an away game, and something different, but being able to score on our chances and gain some self confidence is important.

It'll also be very important, because we have 3 games in a row where we can win. 7-9 pts. in the next three games against Betis, Getafe and Huelva will save us, and that is very important. If we're still in this position when there's like 5-8 games left, the players will start to get very nervous.

Oh, and nice we're playing on a Saturday. It'll mean like a 99% chance of being able to watch it, either by TV or Internet.

if this is a "must win" or not, depends on the attitude that the team will show from now on at riazor.

If yesterday's game was just an exception and we still have problems at riazor, especially against direct rivals, then we should search the points in games like this, against Betis.

But if hopefully, we have found a solution for the riazor games, then i think that, what will give us the permanence will be this different attitude at Riazor. In this case any point at away games, will be more than welcome, so i'm ok with 1 point.

I think a "must win" game is the next at Riazor, against Getafe, or even, the next away game at Recre which is more related to us. I think Betis will save themselves

The issue remains that Betis and Deportivo have similar squads but the Andalucians have five more points.

So, can we claim that we must win this because of our qualities ? No. Should we win this because of our standings? No. A draw will keep Betis involved and for Deportivo it will close the gap with a safe spot.

Of course, with determination and 'luck' we can win this one.
