Default LIGA | 01.03.08 | Deportivo - Sevilla | Pre-Match

For those who already are interested to know when this match takes place: Saturday 1 March (20:00) in Riazor.

Sevilla are in good shape lately. They're currently 6th in the table (UEFA Cup football) and only at 5 points of Champions League participation. Before the season that would have been seen as a bad position, but after the troubled season so far they've made quite a good come-back.

They first play against Irureta's Zaragoza before meeting Deportivo. But until tonight, they have been unbeaten in 4 Liga matches (although not very impressive performances): a much-disputed and mentioned 2-1 injury-time win against Osasuna, a hard-fought 1-2 victory at neighbours Huelva, a 1-1 draw at home against FC Barcelona and a 2-4 defeat at Espanyol (who lost before at home against Betis and Recre).

Sevilla did what they had to do, and that was taking 10 points out of 4 matches, but all-in-all not very convincing.

They did play a good match at Fenerbahce this week, but will have to make up for the 3-2 loss immediately after the Deportivo match. That could be in Depor's advantage.

It will be extremely difficult to prevent Sevilla from scoring if they field Luis Fabiano and Kanouté. Both arrived at Sevilla in 2005 and have scored respectively 32 Liga goals and 35 Liga goals since. At the same time it's kind of logical that other players of Sevilla aren't that productive: Kerzhakov (3 goals) has been sold and others with 3 goals are Navas (22 matches) and Poulsen (19 matches). An-in-all, Sevilla are the second most-productive team in Spain with 46 goals. Real Madrid are first with 54 goals and Barcelona third with 44 goals.

They're weak point this season has been leaking too many goals. It have been 33 in the Liga so far: 9 teams have a better record while Murcia and Recre also have leaked 33 goals. Villarreal and Valencia are at 34 goals. In Europe they scored 14 goals and leaked 10 goals in 7 matches. Again: productive upfront but not stable at the back.

All this means that they're not unbeatable. It's kind of all or nothing this season to them. In 24 Liga matches they won 11 and lost 10. Drawing is not really an option against them.

They're advantage is that they have their line-up clear for this season:
Goalkeeper: Palop
Defenders: Dani Alves, Escudé, Dragutinovic, Adriano
Midfielders: Navas, Keta (Renato), Poulsen, Diego Capel
Attackers: Luis Fabiano, Kanouté

Their weak spot is evident: central defence (they miss Javi Navarro). Out injured for the Deportivo match already is striker Chevantón (injured). But he has only scored 5 Liga goals since arriving at Sevilla in 2006. The others are fit while it seems that none of their players is in danger for suspension.

This changes the overall picture in their advantage. A solid defensive performance, two goals of Luis Fabiano and excellent plays at the wings (Capel, Alves, Navas)....

This match will be played before the 2nd leg of CL, right ? They may want to rest some important players in this match.

The Fener-match is scheduled for the week after the Deportivo match and that's why it was moved to Saturday. If Sevilla are going to make changes, I don't think it'll be many. Maybe bringing Renato and Maresca, which wouldn't make them weaker.

If Sevilla play like they did last night then we'll get well and truly ****ed. When they play like that then I don't think any side in europe can compete with them.

Sevilla were hopeless some time ago, and feared not even reaching UEFA Cup. But now they're at just 2 points of Patetico, who are 4th (meaning CL-football). They smell blood, and I sincerely hope they can postpone this comeback to after next week.

I think we can beat them. We have had good games and have been adding alot of points during the last 5 matchen, don't understand why we wouldn't do it against Seville. Hope we will beat them with a 2-0 score!

we play better in recent games but servilla is also. especially Kanoute is back
their crazy attack is shown in before games against Zaragoza and espanol.
the important thing is to stop Fabiano and Kanoute
win is the best....but draw is also OK

the brightest spots so far this season has been the level shown by Filipe in both defense and offense, and also the return of M.Pablo.. i fully expect them to do their duties against Sevilla..

He did it very well last time we played against them.

I think we should play with Riki or Xisco in attack and give more playing time to Valeron, maybe 20-30 minutes.

I believe in our team for this match, although March is coming and we're still only 18th in the table.

And we should achieve something. Rivals have been getting points against big teams lately, and that's what Deportivo have been lacking. We played good games at Villarreal, Barcelona and Real Madrid but lost them all in the final phase. We played quite well against Valencia (before their poor serie started), but they simply used every chance they had. The same for Atleti who converted their first three chances in Riazor and made the team hopeless. The only big scalp we conquered this season has been the one of.... Sevilla.

Half a season later it's about team we do it again. That is, not losing points in the final phase of the match and not being hopeless after half an hour (like against Valencia and Atleti).

Any team in Spain, having some confidence, can beat any other team. Sure, Sevilla have better players on most positions and have regained some good form. But they're very much dependent on their wings and might be thinking a little bit about their Champions League match after Riazor.

Especially their defence is vulnerable, and I see us scoring one or two goals with Xisco, Willy, Guardado, Riki, Valeron and Lafita available. Depending on our defensive performance, we can get a result. Remember that overall Sevilla have been very poor away from home this season.
