![]() Following the discussion regarding the (just confirmed?) modification of our system:
Barca operate in a 4-3-3 formation which means that the SC area is covered by one player (usually Messi or Vila). Of course, since we’re talking about Barca this is theoretical: We’ve seen them in matches (or parts of matches) operating in asymmetrical formations (eg 2 SCs, 1 winger and D. Alves covering the whole right flank), we’ve also seen them playing initially with zero SCs and player (-s) covering the area in the process. And finally, we’re constantly watching the 3 players upfront mutually changing positions, wingers cutting inside, midfielders moving forward unmarked and so and so on. But basically they perform within the 4-3-3 framework. Anyway, if Lotina finally adopts a back-4, the idea would be that we don’t “waste” 3 central defenders against 1 SC. We play with 2 DCs, in total 4 vs 3 at the back. And we use an extra player to support the battle in the vital midfield area. In this case, one DMC could play pretty deep, further restricting Messi’s mobility in the AMC – SC area. [Of course, you can also play with 3 DCs, keeping a continuity in your plans, supporting the adaptation of your team within the new strategy introduced in November. Provided that your central defenders are confident and mature enough to move forward when necessary, covering gaps in the DMC area. But in Lotina’s system the DCs usually remain in their initial positions, disciplined and coordinated applying the off-side trap. Which means that we play zonal only in theory. But this is a different kind of problem; and a different discussion…] As for M. Pablo, Lotina would “invest” in his acceleration against a lethal D. Alves, generally against a team easily performing in high pace and tension (hoping to witness an improvement in his form, in terms of marking ability, concentration, stuff like that). A final comment: if we play with 2 DMCs (eg 4-2-3-1), Xavi and Iniesta are expected to have plenty of space and time in their moves. In this case, Lotina would organize his defensive formation pretty deep, like in our final 1/3 of the pitch. Our AMC would press on the player possessing the ball, supported by a DMC. It would seem more rational to play with 1 DMC and 2MCs restricting their playmakers. But these two should be 101% concentrated to follow the off ball movements and advances of Barca’s midfielders. The positioning of the wingers is another story. Closing inside to support midfield is common practice, still concentration is again obligatory at 101%. Barca often move radically with long diagonal balls exploiting open spaces, exposing you at the back. |

![]() VAMOS DEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRR
Will be a really tough match tonight. If we can grab 1 point from this game I would be really happy. But why are we playing 4-2-3-1? We haven't won a game with that tactic this season. I don't feel comfortable. |
