Squad news

A busy week for Deportivo and Fernando Vázquez is having problems due to the players with injury issues. Alavés made rotations on Sunday facing Atlético. Lucas Pérez and Joselu might be starters.

2021 is already here and the first week is promising to be very busy for Deportivo, on Wednesday the team is facing the second round in Copa hosting Deportivo Alavés (Riazor, 19h00 CET). Four days later the Blanquiazul outfit is visiting Zamora CF playing for the league (Ruta de la Plata, 17h30 CET).

And coach Fernando Vázquez is facing all of this with his team dealing with injury problems at the squad. Last week, 8 of the 21 players at the first team didn’t work with the group due to several issues. From muscle issues to the COVID-19 case of Yago Gandoy (Adri Castro from Fabril is infected too).

For the first game with Alavés at least four men will be out. Derik Osede was going to be a starter in the Teresa Herrera, but he picked a muscle problem during the warming up and now his condition is uncertain after not training with the group since then. Miku and Borja Galán will also miss the game.

The Venezuelan striker suffered a muscle injury in the last liga game with Celta B, while the ex-Fabril winger picked a muscle issue during a training session on last week. Then the case of Borja Granero, who is suspended for this game after been sent off with a direct red card in the previous match with El Ejido.

A fifth man that can skip the game is Diego Rolan. He had fever during the weekend and is pending of a COVID-19 test, for this reason he didn’t train on Monday. There are more problems, starting with Uche Agbo. The Nigerian midfielder was allowed to travel to Nigeria for the holidays and joined the trainings until Monday, and it isn’t clear if the coach will pick him with only two training sessions before the game.  Gandoy also joined the trainings on Monday after been in isolation, and it isn’t clear if he will be picked.

It’s neither clear if the coach is going to make rotations. Last week he picked several players from Fabril (Pablo Brea, Manu Mosquera, Juan Rodríguez, Trilli, Guille Bueno, Iván Guerrero & Álex Barba), but during the tests, he was using first team players at the lineups, while on Monday the only B team members in the session were Alberto, Juan Rodriguez and Manu Mosquera.

At Alavés, coach Pablo Machín risked a lot with his decisions during the weekend. His team is only three points above demotion at Primera División, but he decided to make rotations on Sunday as his side was welcoming Atlético Madrid. Thus, the team played with a 4-1-4-1 scheme with Deyverson Silva alone in attack leaving Lucas Pérez and Joselu on the bench.

It didn’t work as they lost the game (1-2) and now the ex-Depor duo is set to start against their former club. There were other rotations in other sectors, like left-back Rubén Duarte or left winger Luis Rioja. Also, the case of midfielder Tomás Pina, who didn’t play against Atlético for been suspended.

In the end Machín might end playing against Depor with at least five normal starters in liga. He also has casualties for the meeting at the Riazor. Centre-back Rodrigo Ely and midfielder Pere Pons are missing the game due to injury reasons, while Víctor Laguardia is suspended after been sent off with a direct red card against Atlético.
