REVIEW: DEPOR LADIES 1 – LEVANTE 3 (LIGA)

01 Feb 2021
New defeat for a Depor Ladies that didn’t play badly, but that fell down before a rival with a bigger punch. The team remains as the bottom club in the league.

BEFORE THE GAME
After a new suspension in midweek, Depor Ladies retuned to compete. Coach Manu Sánchez was still missing winger Carolina Arbeláez and centre-back Ainoa Campo for injury reasons, and this time Helena Sánchez was also out. So, the coach had to pick Eva Dios and María Figueroa from the B squad in order to cover the available spots. The latter was even a starter and debuted with the team.

THE MATCH
Depor Ladies continue in the descending spiral towards the relegation. In this game they didn’t play badly, but it was unable to surpass a rival in a good moment and that’s a machine at the moment of scoring goals.

The game was stopped for the first minute, because both teams, and the rest of teams on the league, were protesting for the way the RFEF has handled the postponed games due to the COVID-19. The game had a slow start, no one was controlling the actions. The first chance to score was a volley of Alba Redondo that passed close to the far post of Depor Ladies (12’).

Just one minute later, Lucia Gómez collected a cross from the left and his header went close to the crossbar (13’). The visiting side was starting to feel more comfortable and was the only one having the arrivals. At minute 20, a free-kick of Claudia Zornoza was blocked by Sullastres.

Then Depor Ladies balanced the game, though the locals weren’t having a clear chance to score. But then Levante UF showed their power and scored consecutive goals. The first came after a strong shot of Alba Redondo was deflected by Sullastres, then it hit the post and Esther González scored from close range.

The second goal arrived after a cross of Lucia Gómez was found by Alba Redondo and she scored from close range. There was no reaction from Depor Ladies, actually Levante UD were closer to the third goal after having a couple of arrivals within the last five minutes.

Michelle Romero entered for Maria Figueroa at half-time and Depor Ladies were trying to be more vertical. Just two minutes after the kick-off, Athenea completed a shot that was saved by visiting goalie María Valenzuela.

That initial pressure was reduced with the passing of the minutes and Levante UD were feeling comfortable having a two-goal lead. The second substitution for Depor Ladies was the entry of Bedoya for Blanco, the latter get injured.

Depor Ladies were insisting, but the goal wasn’t arriving. Manu Sánchez tried to refresh the attack with the entry of Eva Dios, and the goal arrived in the last stretch. It was a corner-kick in which Gaby headed the ball home.

The game was going to have an exciting end as the advantage for Levante UD was now minimal, but the visiting side was going to score a third goal to define the game. Substitute Andonova released a lateral free-kick and Esther found the ball at the box to score his brace.
