A bad second half by Deportivo have provoked a new defeat and to end the hopes of the promotion. The team returned to be the clueless outfit of past matches that’s unable to turn around a negative situation.

Coach Rubén De La Barrera decided to repeat the lineup of the previous game, the one that achieved the first victory since his arrival to the bench. This meant that Keko Gontán was sat on the bench as José Lara stayed at the starting formation.

The draw was a 4-3-3 with Lucho García defending the goal. Eneko Bóveda covered the right side of the defence, Héctor Hernández covered the left flank, the central positions were for Mujaid Sadick and Borja Granero. Midfield was territory for Celso Borges, Uche Agbo and Diego Villares. Then the trident in attack was composed by Rai Nascimento, Rayco Rodríguez and Lara.

At Racing Ferrol, coach Cristóbal Parralo presented a 4-1-4-1 formation with novelties, because Juan Sebastián Peñaloza and David Rodríguez were starters at midfield, while ex-Depor Quique Fornos kept the spot at the centre of the defence as Yeferson Quintana was sat on the bench. The reference in attack was José Luis Gómez ‘Joselu’.

Decent first half for Deportivo, after a slow start, Los Blanquiazules started to put pressure at midfield and they found the cracks at the local defence, enough to create three clear chances to score, but the scoresheet was empty at the break.

Racing Ferrol started the game with the expected tactic of trying to seize the aerial game of their attackers, but their first chance came in a combinative play in which Elsinho and David Rodríguez dribbled rivals at the edge of the area, and before Caballé was able to release a shot, Borja Granero cleared the danger (9’).

Deportivo weren’t creating any danger, but their sporadic pressure was giving problems to the locals as in a couple of opportunities they had problems to clear the ball. Longer were the plays for the locals, mainly when Juan Sebastián Peñaloza was touching the ball on the right, but they lacked aim to make a proper pass into the area.

Then Depor had two straight chances and the game changed. In the first, a good play of Rai on the left allowed Héctor Hernández to collect the play at the far post and his shot was defected by Diego Rivas, in the resulting corner-kick, Uche Agbo headed the ball downwards, it hit the pitch and later the keeper cleared it over the crossbar (25’).

The polemic play occurred at minute 30, Villares drilled a pass to Rai, who was going to face the keeper one-on-one, but the referee whistled an inexistent offside. Six minutes later, Rayco didn’t arrive in time at the far post in order to connect a header of Uche Agbo. At this point Depor were deserving the lead.

Depor continued to enjoy of the best opportunities, the visiting side had two within the last five minutes. At minute 43, Villares collected the ball at the edge of the area after the local defence cleared the ball in a free-kick, and the ex-Fabril sent the ball over the crossbar. And in the added time, a counterattack for Los Blanquiazules ended with a cross of Bóveda that Rai missed to push in when the Brazilian winger was at the box.

A poor second half by Deportivo have cost a new defeat and the dream of reaching the promotion. The team conceded an early goal and later was unable to turn around the scenario, the changes of the coach didn’t work.

Deportivo started the second part pushing in attack, but Racing Ferrol found the first goal. A cross from the right was poorly cleared inside the area by Borja Granero, the ball reached the path of Pepe Caballé, who scored with a low and crossed shot.

It can be said that the game ended there, because Deportivo was unable to revert the situation. The team lost the strength of the first part, there were no good combinations in attack and the chances were scarce. So, all Racing Ferrol had to do was to sit and wait for the final whistle.

Depor were in shock after the goal and Elsinho was close to score the second after heading a cross from Álex López, but Lucho García made the save (50’). The visiting side didn’t have an arrival until minute 58, Rayco tried to make a solo-play on the right. But he was unable to release a shot. In the counterattack Mujaid cleared the ball before Joselu was able to release a shot.

De La Barrera made the first changes, Keko Gontán and Borja Galán replaced Lara and Borges. The true is that the changes never worked. The team was unable to connect three straight passes and the chances to score never came.

Claudio Beauvue replaced Rayco in the last modification of Depor. Racing Ferrol did everything in order to waste time, but the true is that they never suffered. The only chances for Depor in the final stretch were a free-kick of Galán in which the ball went out (73’), and the header of Beauvue after a free-kick of Keko that Diego Rivas cleared to corner-kick (86’).

The “old” Deportivo is back, a team unable to seize its few opportunities fell after allowing a goal from Racing Ferrol. There was enough time to react, but the team simply was unable to connect three straight passes.

This defeat will surely put an end to the promotion aspirations of Deportivo. With three games remaining, only a miracle will put Depor between the first three places. The most realistic goal is to ensure the continuity in the third tier. There’s a break in liga on next weekend, the next game is the visit of Pontevedra CF to the Riazor (Match 7).
