WHO WILL REPLACE DE GUZMAN?

19 Mar 2008
Lotina already appointed that there are three candidates to replace Julian de Guzmn for Saturday's game against Mallorca: Joan Verd, Juan Rodrguez and Antonio Toms. This last two have more options since they are more used to perform in the same functions than the Canadian international.

The main novelty for Saturday's match at the One Stadi (20h00) is that Julian de Guzmn is suspended after the Canadian picked his fifth yellow card of the season in the previous game against Real Madrid. That's the only change that Lotina will make in his 5-2-2-1 formation. The same Lotina already appointed who are his options for the job, as he said after Tuesday's training:  "The logical thing is to put Antonio (Toms), Verd or Juan (Rodriguez). It's pretty sure it will come for one of this three players."

And it won't be an easy job, because De Guzmn has become an important piece in Deportivo's strategy. The Canadian international has played twenty six liga games on this season. In fact, he has only missed fourteen minutes within the last ten matches. Besides, he has stolen the ball in 180 opportunities during the whole liga campaign, a number that represents the 15th best mark in Primera Divisin.

Of the three candidates for the job, Joan Verd is the player that has enjoyed of more minutes in this liga season:

But the fact is that Verd is more used to play as a winger or as a playmaker, therefore Antonio Toms and Juan Rodrguez should be the two main option for Lotina in order to play in midfield. Of this two players, only Juan Rodrguez has appeared as starter at the same time than Sergio during the present season. The Andalusian did this between matchdays 2 and 5 (games against Valladolid, Betis, Getafe and Recreativo).

Juan Rodrguez already said that he will be happy to perform in the pivote function "I work in order to be a starter in every game, but that depends on the coach. We know there's a vacancy and have I played there in some occasions, but I have also played on both wings. If I have to choose, I prefer to play as a pivote. I have clear in my mind the tasks of this function, with one scheme or with the other one. It isn't a new thing for me and I'm hoping to be a starter on Saturday." declarations that were made to newspaper La Opinin.

Antonio Toms also have the hope of been the selected choice for the game against Mallorca, as he said to reporters: "Each week, I see myself with options of been an starter, but that's a decision of Lotina. Off course I will like to play now that Julian is suspended, but there are more team mates and the coach is who decides."
