MATCHDAY 33: DEPOR IN INTERTOTO

22 Apr 2008
Deportivo already reached the Intertoto spot and some players are even dreaming with the UEFA zone. Despite this, the salvation isn't secured yet. In fact, the battle for the permanence is more complicated than never before, six clubs are separated by only four points and anything can happen in a second round that has Deportivo as the most in-form team in Primera.

Lotina's team extended its streak of consecutive wins in Primera Divisin to four, a fact that has allowed Deportivo to reach the Intertoto spot, an amazing thing taking in mind that Depor was penultimate in the table in January of the present year. And its' that Deportivo has added 29 points during the 14 matches played in the second round.

Some players like Lopo and Aouate already affirmed that the UEFA zone should be the new target of Deportivo, but it seems complicated. The sixth place is five points away from the Galicians, and with fifteen points still in dispute, Depor will need to maintain the pace and to see Sevilla continuing with its current poor form.

The Sevillians have only added the 40% of the points in dispute within the last five matches. If this situation continues during the last five games of the season, Jimnez's squad will end the tournament with 57 points, meaning that Depor will need to add 11 of the 15 points still in dispute in order to reach them, something difficult taking in mind that Lotina's side still has to face FC Barcelona, Atltico Madrid and Villarreal.

Depor must also keep an eye over Almera, the Andalucians are making a great campaign and they could enter into the UEFA zone if Unai Emery's team is able to defeat Valladolid at the Jos Zorilla and if Sevilla loses at Murcia during the weekend. Almera is not inscribed for the Intertoto, but if they enter into the UEFA zone, they will displace Sevilla, team that's already inscribed for the Intertoto. This scenario means that Sevillan will take the Intertoto spot and not Depor.

Another situation is that despite the good moment lived by Deporitvo, the squad isn't saved yet. The victory of Zaragoza is keeping the distance with the 18th place (9 points) and it's complicating the fight for the permanence. So far, six clubs are heavily involved in this battle: Getafe (41), Osasuna (40), Valencia (39), Valladolid (39), Zaragoza (37) and Recreativo (37).

But there's an interesting fact checking the current situation in the table:

The six clubs fighting to survive are having less than 50% of effectiveness within the past five games in liga, and if they keep the same pace during the last five games of the season, they will not be able to reach Deportivo, even if the Galicians lose the remaining five matches in the calendar. The team in the worst form is Valencia, the recent crowned champion in copa del rey has only added three of the last fifteen points, reason why Koeman was sacked on Monday, his place has been taken by ex-Depor defender Voro. Taking in mind the percentages presented in the table, Valencia (20%) and Getafe (13.33%) are the most compromised teams and they need to improve their numbers if they don't want further problems.

Another interesting fact is that the most in-form teams in Primera are currently Deportivo, Betis (both 80% of effectiveness in the last five games), Almera, Athletic Bilbao and RCD Mallorca (this three with 66.67%). this five clubs are battling to gain a place in Europe and are also between the seven best teams during the second round in la liga:

About this last table, an interesting case is the one of RCD Espanyol, the Catalans made the best first round in their history adding 36 points in 19 matches and only losing 3 encounters, reason that put them in the fourth spot in the table. But things have turned upside down as Valverde's side has only added three victories in the second round.

Also particular is the case of Deportivo. The Galicians only added five points at home during the first round, but they are undefeated at the Riazor during the second part of la liga as Lotina's team has added six wins and one draw in the seven home matches played in this period of time. Besides, for the first time on the season, the goal difference of Depor is zero and the number of victories is already the same than the defeats: 13.

The drama for the relegation continues on matchday 34, Recreativo faces Levante and Zaragoza visits Espanyol, while the direct confrontation of the week is the visit of Osasuna to Mestalla. Depor hosts Barcelona keeping an eye in the matches of Sevilla, Almeria and also in the visit of Atlhetic Bilbao to Real Madrid, this last one is important in order to keep the Intertoto spot.
