THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS ON DUTY

23 May 2008
Guardado and De Guzman made a good job and fulfilled the qualification of their teams to the third qualifying round in the CONCACAF region, while Bodipo and Equatorial Guinea almost lost its chances to continue in the road to the 2010 World Cup. Meanwhile, Filipe Luis debuted with Brazil's Olympic team and Coloccini was a vital piece in the visit of Argentina to Brazil.

Four Depor's players had international duty during the last seven days. First Fabricio Coloccini had the chance to play with Argentina's first team during the FIFA World Cup 2010 qualifiers. Argentina was visiting Brazil in Belo Horizonte during the past Wednesday and since Demichelis was suspended, Coloccini was chosen in order to play in the centre of a 3-men defensive line.

Colo did a good job and was a vital piece to achieve a scoreless draw that keeps intact the chances of Argentina. In the other side, coach Dunga is facing a strong opposition after the latest poor results of his team. That's why a lot of criticism was hear during Saturday's friendly game between Brazil's Olympic team and a squad of local players from Ro de Janeiro.

Filipe Luis debuted in this match as he replaced Leonardo during the second half. Brazil's Olympic team won the game that was played in Rio de Janeiro with a goal scored by Alexandre Pato, but the result didn't please the public since they chanted against coach Dunga.

During the weekend, other three Depor's players participated during the World Cup qualifiers. First, Julian De Guzmn took part with Canada during Friday's victory over Saint Vincent and The Grenadines (4-1). The midfielder started the game and was replaced at minute 67. Depors player was booked at minute 41.

Meanwhile, Andrs Guardado played with Mexico on Saturday's night during the second-leg game against Belize (played in Monterey). The Mexicans crushed the Central American squad with a 7-0 score and Guardado scored a goal with a shot from outside the box. The winger was replaced at minute 48 after suffering a tough tackled by a rival .

Now Canada and Mexico will collide in the third round of the CONCACAF region. The remaining twelve teams will compete in a group stage that will define the last six teams fighting for the three tickets to the World Cup, a fourth team will have the chance to play against the fifth place in South America for an additional spot. The group of both teams is composed by Canada, Mexico, Honduras and Jamaica. The best two teams will qualify to the fourth and final round in the region.

Who didn't had good luck was Rodolfo Bodipo, because Equatorial Guinea lost with Nigeria during the game played in the national stadium of Abuja (0-2). Bodipo played as an starter and was replaced at minute 66. He was also booked. With this result, Nigeria advances to the third phase in Africa. With two matches remaining in group three, Equatorial Guinea occupies the last place with three points, one less than South Africa and Sierra Leone. South Africa is hosting the next World Cup but they were invited to play the qualifying round.
