NOT A GOOD START FOR DE GUZMAN

05 Nov 2008
Julian De Guzm??n is living a negative start of campaign, the suspensions and injuries have sidelined him from three of the nine matchdays played so far in liga, while he has missed other four games between Intertoto and UEFA. A very different situation compared to the past season, campaign in which the Canadian played 35 of the 38 liga matches, including 30 complete games.

Things haven’t been so good for Julian de Guzm??n during the present season. He already missed three matches in liga due to different situations. He firstly failed to play the encounter against Villarreal because he arrived late after competing with Canada in the road to the World Cup. Later he didn’t play at Valencia because he was sent off during the previous game with Osasuna, while he missed the victory over Numancia due to an abductor injury (groin strain).

And now the Canadian will miss the next three matches in liga (Espanyol, Atl?©tico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao) and probably the game against Feyenoord Rotterdam and his brother, this after suffering a thigh injury during the last game at the Luis de Lopera. De Guzm??n only spent seven minutes on the pitch and had to be replaced by Sergio. Doctors determined the kind of injury that he suffered and now appoint he will need three weeks in order to be recuperated.

This situation has been repeated in the other competitions. De Guzm??n played the lonely game in Copa disputed so far, but he missed the two matches in Intertoto since he had more vacations due to the international activity. Besides, the ex-Hannover has missed two of the five matches played in UEFA, it were both legs against Brann Bergen. The first match after been sent off in the previous European match against Hajduk Split and the second leg for the same injury that left him out of the game against Numancia.

And things were very different on the past season, because De Guzm??n only missed three games in liga plus both legs in copa against RCD Espanyol. Actually the Canadian midfielder was the third player at the squad in terms of more minutes played (2,923), only Fabricio Coloccini (3,420) and Manuel Pablo (2,988) presented a better statistics.

The injury of De Guzm??n is also coming in a bad moment since Antonio Tom??s is also out of the squad due to an ankle sprain suffered in the Copa del Rey first-leg against Elche. This means that Sergio and Juan Rodr?guez are the only alternatives of coach Miguel Angel Lotina for the two positions in midfield, at least for the upcoming match against RCD Espanyol

About the setback against the Catalans and the problems of De Guzm??n, Lotina commented on Tuesday â€?The casualty of Julian is significant, because he was one of the most important players on the past season. This year he has faced more problems because he has missed continuity due the injuries and suspensions, and for the kind of player he is, he needs continuity. And with Antonio Tom??s out too, their casualties are more noticed, because they are occurring at the same time, though we will try to cover them with Juan Rodr?guez, Sergio and Verd??â€?
