It seems that Deportivo has finally learned the lesson after the big setbacks against CSKA Moscow and Sporting Gij??n, that because the team has not leaked a goal within the last four official matches. However, the defensive work will face on Sunday a complicate exam: Atl?©tico Madrid. One of the best offensive lines in la liga.

Deportivo was living in the shadows after two straight 0-3 defeats against Sporting Gij??n in liga and  CSKA Moscow in UEFA. The errors and distractions were a common thing in defence, but during the last four matches, those inaccuracies have disappeared as the team accumulates 366 minutes without allowing a goal during an official match. That’s the best  mark since Lotina took control of Deportivo during the past season.

It is necessary to go back to the 2006/2007 campaign in order to find a better mark, at the time Depor was coached by Joaqu?n Caparr??s and achieved four straight clean sheets between matchdays 21 and 24 in la liga. During that period, the squad accumulated 456 minutes without leaking a goal.

Now the defensive improvement is one of the reasons why Deportivo has passed the round of 32 in Copa and also explains why the squad is currently sixth in la liga. However, there’s another reason: the improvement of the strikers. And it’s that Depor has scored eight goals within the last four matches, this average of two goals per game is one of the highest saw in recent times.

To make things better, four of those eight goals were conquered by the strikers at the squad (two by Riki, one by Omar Bravo and one by Bodipo). That means more than the whole count of goals conquered by the strikers in the previous eight matchdays in liga and the two previous rounds in UEFA. A sign that the striking zone at Depor might be waking up.

Now a big exam arrives for Depor: Atl?©tico Madrid. Mainly because the Madrilenians represent the fourth best scoring record in Primera Divisi??n with 19 goals scored so far. Actually, Atl?©tico has scored at least one goal in 41 of the last 43 matches played at the Calder??n for la liga, the only exceptions were the 0-2 defeat Vs. Real Madrid (matchday 20, 2007/2008) and the recent 0-1 loss with Sevilla (matchday 05, 2008/2009). Without doubt a huge exam for Depor’s defence.

Meanwhile, the players at the squad are conscious about the situation. Left-back Filipe Luis explained to newspaper La Opini??n the reason why the defensive record has improved so much lately To be strong at the back is the important thing, and I’m a defender, therefore the goal is to defend well and later to contribute in attack. But it must be with a cold mind, because in the matches in which I was attacking too much, too many balls entered by my side and they scored against us, so we must be calmed, to not lose the position and when we are attacking, to do it with prudence.

For the game at the Vicente Calder??n, Lotina is forced to make a modification in defence, that’s because Z?© Castro in unable to play for contract reasons. The two players that are fighting for the spot are Diego Colotto and Adri??n L??pez â€?Piscu’. Colotto was affirming the squad must emphasise the order on the pitch â€?I believe the squad bases its game in the order and the sacrifice, those facts allow you to make a nice match and win the games. The team was really well in that aspect and you later notice this with the results.â€? While Piscu was praising the concentration of the whole team â€?I believe we have corrected the errors of other games and we have achieved a clean sheet in the last four games, something fundamental, but it’s a work of the whole squad.â€?
