MR. PENALTY

08 Jan 2009
Sergio has not missed a penalty in his career, the Catalan scored the decisive goal against Getafe in liga and has taken his tally to seven goals after seven penalties. Since the era of Bebeto, Deportivo hasn’t had a so effective man from the penalty spot.

It’s always important to have an effective penalty taker, and Deportivo has one at its squad: Sergio. The ex-Espanyol man never took a penalty at his former-club, this because Galca and Roger were the specialists at the time. He even wasn’t throwing the penalties after his arrival to Depor, this since other ones like Djalminha, Donato, Makaay or Trist??n were the first men on the list.

His technique is very well defined. First he takes the ball and kisses it, a ritual that gives him luck. Then he takes distance and starts to run, just when he is near to touch the ball, he stops, a maneuver invented by the mythic Pele and that’s known as paradinha’. The intention of the paradinha’ is to create doubt in the keeper, something that has worked out as Sergio as scored in the seven penalties that he has taken in liga (he never thrown one in liga or in Europe).

The Catalan started to throw the penalties at Depor after the exit of Diego Trist??n, former coach Joaqu?n Caparr??s gave him the responsibility for the season 2006/2007 and he scored in the first match of that campaign, it was the 2-1 in a match against Zaragoza that ended 3-2 for the Galicians. It was the lonely penalty he had in that particular season.

He kept the responsibility for the 2007/2008 campaign, the first one with Miguel Angel Lotina aboard, and this time he had four chances from the penalty spot. He firstly scored a key goal in the visit to Levante (1-0, matchday 17), then he scored the first goal in the match against Villarreal (3-4, matchday 19), this was the only opportunity in which Sergio scored a goal through a penalty in a game that ended in defeat for Depor.

The other two goals from Sergio came in consecutive matches: Athletic Bilbao (3-0, matchday 32) and Osasuna (1-0, matchday 33). For the present season he has taken two penalties. First in the last matchday of the past year as he scored the goal that meant the 2-0 against Recreativo, he had to repeat the penalty because the referee disallowed the first one. In the end the game ended 4-1 in favour of Depor. The last one was conquered in the last matchday against Getafe and was also important since it meant the decisive 2-1 in the scoresheet.

Only other two Depor’s players have been able to keep a 100% of effectiveness from the penalty spot, the first one is Bebeto who scored eight in la liga though he missed one in Copa Del Rey and UEFA, reason why he didn’t want to throw that fatal penalty that Djukic missed against Valencia on May 14th 1994, penalty that cost a liga championship. The other man that never failed in la liga was Rivaldo, the Brazilian scored three goals through this way during his lonely season at Depor.

Other professor’ in this department is Diego Trist??n, the Andalusian striker scored 15 liga goals in 17 attempts from the penalty spot, actually he’s the historic Pichichi of Depor in terms of penalties that ended in goals. After 38 seasons at Primera and until the last matchday, Depor has scored 114 goals through penalties. The following is the list of the scorers of those goals:
