Javier Irureta became famous in A Coru?a due to his calculations and the ?homework? he always referred to, now Lotina wants to continue with the tradition as he’s already making numbers in order to achieve a European place at the end of the season.

Deportivo already added 42 points in la liga championship, that’s the magic number always appointed as the target in order to achieve the permanence. And with 12 matchdays remaining in the calendar, Lotina’s side has a new target: A European position at the end of the campaign. For the goal, the Galician team must reach between 68 (Champions League) and 60 points (UEFA), this judging by the latest tournaments at Primera Divisi??n.

Taking in mind that Depor ended the first round with 30 points, the task means to repeat the numbers during the second round. Something that Lotina already knows, as he said to newspaper La Voz De Galicia: ?I’m pretty sure that if we improve or match the numbers of the first round,  we would end among the six top teams.? For the moment, Deportivo is fulfilling the mission: it’s already sixth in the table and has added twelve points in the second round, that means three more points compared to the situation at the same moment of the first round.

Since the season 2000/2001, all the teams in Spain that have reached the mark of the 60 points have ended playing in Europe, the only exception was Atletico Madrid, team that added 60 on the season 2006/2007, but they ended 7th (tied with Zaragoza but with a worse goal average). The Champions League is more difficult to reach, judging for the pace of the direct rivals involved in the fight for the 4th place, the task will need to end the season with at least 63 points.

All of this means that Depor needs at least 18 more points in order to have concrete aspirations of ending in a European place, in other words the Galicians will need to add the 50% of the points still in dispute in order to fulfill the aspirations of playing in Europe for the second straight year.

A crucial thing for Depor would be the direct confrontations against Atletico Madrid (matchday 30) and Malaga (matchday 33), two of the five candidates that will the end the season fighting for the 4th place in the table plus the two UEFA spots. Also, it will be interesting to follow the trajectory of Malaga, the Andalusians start this weekend with the toughest point in their calendar as they face Sevilla, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal during the next four matchdays.
