MISSING A FREE-KICK TAKER

07 Apr 2009
A lot of things are missed by Deportivo during the present campaign, especially in attack, one of those things is a specialist in free-kicks. And it’s that Lafita has been the only one able to score a goal in a direct free-kick within the last two years.

Since the last promotion to Primera Divisi??n, Deportivo has had important free-kick takers in its squad. First it was Bebeto and later Rivaldo and Djalminha. But lately this figure has vanished from the squad, and its’ that the Galician team has just scored one goal in liga from a direct free-kick within the last two years.

Curiously, the strategic plays have been appointed as one of the stronger points of Deportivo on recent seasons. And it’s that a good percentage of the goals scored were conquered after taking a set-piece, but the fact is that none of those goals came after a Depor’s player took a direct free-kick. It often occurred as part of a secondary play and as somebody recollected a cross in the area, but never after a direct shot in front of a barrier.

The last goal in a direct free-kick was conquered by Angel Lafita on this season’s 2-0 win over Malaga (December 7th, 2008), though he had the collaboration of Verd??, who gave him a short pass, and Goitia, Malaga’s keeper that failed to contain the ball at the far post. And for the previous goal scored in a direct-free kick, it is necessary to go back in time exactly two years, because the previous goal in liga conquered in this way was scored by Iago Iglesias during a 1-0 win over Gimnastic at the Riazor (April 8th, 2007).

This means that Deportivo has just scored twice in liga through a direct free-kick during the last two tournaments, this no matter the squad supposedly have specialist in this matter as Sergio, Guardado or Verd??. Sergio has scored wonderful goals in direct free-kick, like the one that gave the first victory at the Camp Nou during the season 2000/2001. But lately, the Catalan hasn’t been able to score a goal in this way. He did it at Montjuic against Espanyol during the past season, but it was for Copa Del Rey.

Definitely, coach Lotina needs to test this kind of actions with his players. The last attempt was made by Guardado during the past weekend game with Espanyol, but he missed the target as the ball hit first the barrier. That has been the destiny of all the free-kick attempts made by Depor in recent times.
