ARE THE GOALS COMING BACK?

28 Apr 2009
For the first time in five years, Deportivo has scored at least one goal in ten consecutive matchdays. Ten confrontations in which the Galicians have scored the 37% of the total goals of the season. Important fact now the squad is fighting for Europe.

Deportivo still alive in the quest for Europe, this no matter it has only scored 43 goals on the liga season, mark that isn’t superior to the ones of Getafe (43) and Betis (47), clubs currently struggling to survive at Primera Divisi??n. Actually, between the first eight places in la liga, Depor is the side that has scored lesser goals on the campaign.

And it’s that the lack of goals is the same old problem that has affected Deportivo during recent seasons. In the years of the Champions League, Irureta’s team always passed the mark of 60 goals per campaign. With Caparr??s and Lotina the team hasn’t passed the mark of 50. However, it seems things are improving lately, because the number of goals has been rising within the last two months. By mid-February, the Galician squad had only 27 goals in 23 matchdays after the goalless game against Osasuna at the Riazor (Feb 14).

But since that day, Depor has scored at least one goal in each one of the ten matchdays played in the period. Totally, sixteen goals that have meant fifteen points. The last time Deportivo scored at least one goal in ten consecutive liga matches occurred between the seasons 2003/2004 and 2004/2005, time when Depor scored at least one goal between matchday 37 of the 2003/2004 campaign and matchday 8 of the following season. Curiously, the last match of this streak was another 1-1 draw at La Rosaleda (Oct 23rd, 2004).

What remains the same is the contribution of the strikers to the number of goals scored, because the forwards at the squad have only scored 6 of 16 goals conquered within the last ten matchdays: 3 for Riki, 2 for Lassad and 1 for Bodipo. About the rest, 1 was scored by a defender (Piscu) and the other 9 by the midfielders: 3 by Verd??, 2 by Juan Rodr?guez, 2 by Sergio, 1 by Lafita and Pablo Alvarez.

A curious thing is that this awakening period with the goals has coincided with the darkest moment of the Pichichi at the squad, Angel Lafita, because the Aragonian has only scored once within the last ten matchdays, actually he has spent the last seven games without conquering a goal in liga. No matter who scores the goals, it is very important to continue with the current streak if Lotina’s side wants to achieve a place in Europe for the upcoming season.
