THE BALANCE IS BACK

06 May 2009
The last four matches represent the best moment of Depor on the season, at least statistically. Because it is the first time that Lotina’s side adds 10 of 12 possible points. The secret is the balance between the goals scored and allowed.

Deportivo is recovering the momentum in the exact moment, just when the European places are about to be decided. The Galician team has achieved three victories plus one draw within the last four liga matches, that’s the best mark on the season. During the first round the team clinched three straight wings (Athletic, Almeria, Malaga), but it was coming from a defeat (Atletico) and the positive streak ended with the loss at Valladolid. Therefore this is the best moment of Deportivo on the season in a statistical sense.

And the secret for this has been the balance between attack and defence, because Depor has only scored five goals in those four matches, but it has only allowed one. No matter that Lotina’s team continues to have troubles scoring the goals, the true is that it is enjoying of its best streak within the last five years.

Because with the goal scored against Valladolid, Depor clinched a mark of 11th straight games scoring at least once, that’s the best mark since Irureta’s team did the same between matchday 36 of the season 2002/2003 and matchday 08 of the 2003/2004 campaign (Atletico, Athletic, Espanyol, Zaragoza, Athletic, Sevilla, Albacete, Osasuna, Atletico, Barcelona and Valencia). The historic record at the club is 25 straight matchdays scoring at least one goal, mark that was achieved by the same Irureta between matchday 28 of the season 2000/2001 and matchday 14 of the 2001/2002 campaign.

The numbers in defence means also a record on the season; because it is the first time the Galician squad only leaks one goal in four straight matches, in other words, three clean sheets within four games. The last time Deportivo achieved four straight clean sheets in liga was with Caparr??s between matchdays 21 and 24 of the season 2006/2007. The historic record at the club is seven straight clean sheets, something achieved back on the season 1993/1994 (between matchdays 12 & 18).
