THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS IN ACTION

11 Sep 2009
It was the same scenario of the past weekend, because only Guardado saw action among the three international players of Deportivo. He was a starter in the victory of Mexico over Honduras, while Ze Castro and Filipe stayed out of their games.

Andrés Guardado played the fully 90 minutes during the 1-0 win of Mexico over Honduras at Estadio Azteca. It was a hard game for the Mexican side since the rival spent the time locked at its own area. The win is leaving Mexico near to the World Cup 2010, the North American nation already secured at least the fourth spot (which faces the fifth place in South America for an extra ticket) and will secure a direct pass with a new win over El Salvador on October 10, game that will be played again at Estadio Azteca.

About the performance of Guardado, this time the winger played as a defensive midfielder, appearing behind Cuathemoc Blanco at the left side, Blanco scored the winning goal through a penalty kick. The new position of Guardado meant that he had less participation in the attacks of his team; his lonely chance to score was a shot from the edge of the area that went over the crossbar.

In South America, Filipe Luis, again, stayed out of the final squad and wasn’t even on the bench during Brazil’s win over Chile (4-2) in Salvador de Bahia. Brazil is already qualified to the World Cup, but Filipe hasn’t been able to debut yet wearing the national shirt.

Another player that still without performing with his national team is Ze Castro; his Portugal achieved a crucial 1-0 win against Hungary in Budapest and still has chances to qualify, though it needs to win its two remaining games and see the combination of other results. Like it happened with Filipe, Ze Castro wasn’t even on the bench.
