WHAT THE PAPERS WROTE: DEPORTIVO – ESPANYOL (LIGA)

21 Sep 2009
The papers sought all kind of explanations for the first defeat of the season at the Riazor. Some said it was the lack of intensity at the start of both halves, while others were blaming the fact of having two defensive midfielders playing at the same time.

La Opinion A Coruña: Depor wakes up late. Lotina complains that this Depor takes too long to get into the games; and he’s right. It’s like the team is cold when is going out to the pitch, carried away by the rival and just expecting to see what happens. It happened against Real Madrid, Malaga and yesterday was more of the same at the start of both halves. That’s why it lost against Espanyol (2-3), which was the better team while Depor left it, but eventually ended locked at its own area against the pressure of the Blanquiazul team in the final part of the encounter. Only at that stage, when the match was dying, Lotina’s team had faith and went up front with determination, without order or fluidity, but with courage. Until then, the image of the team was dark gray, almost black. Eugenio Cobas.

La Voz de Galicia: Too much destruction and little creation in the axis of the Galician team, lacking an organizer of the game. Between the double pivote at Espanyol and Deportivo there was a difference. The Catalans had Verdú embedded with a destroyer. At the local team Juan Rodriguez and Juca were playing at the same time, a duo more gifted for the destruction and collocation than for building the plays, two players for the same function. Thus, Depor was left, again, with a single generator of game, the same one of always: Juan Carlos Valerón. When the team didn’t found the Canarian, the squad barely had depth. It lacked that necessary spark in midfield. As it was seen in the game Fabril-Deportivo of the pre-season, the B squad has Juan Dominguez at its team, someone that a section of the stands are beginning to call.

Xornal de Galicia: Deportivo suffered a defeat against Espanyol in a very nice game for the fans, because there was a large number of goals with two teams who love to move the ball. One of the keys for the final result was that Deportivo gave too many facilities in defense, although there is no excuse to deny the merit of the striking zone at Espanyol, who constantly won the back of Deportivo’s defenders. The other factor is that Espanyol was more effective than Deportivo, who disposed of a number of occasions, especially at the end of the game.

With the score 1-3, Lotina decided to go for a triple change to find his team's reaction for the final thirty minutes. It was a risky decision and also unusual, because in the final half an hour, any injury would have forced Deportivo to finish the match with ten players. However, the blue and white coach was aware that there was nothing to lose and the events gave him the reason. Deportivo scored the second goal with Lassad and locked Espanyol, but it wasn’t enough. Eduardo López ‘Beci’

Sport: Whether it was for the injuries or illness, the fact is that Espanyol presented itself with a renewed energy and three new faces compared to the side that played against Real Madrid just a week ago. With Raúl Tamudo, Shunshuke Nakamura and Iván De la Peña in Barcelona, and Ivan Alonso unwell in the hotel, it was time for young people. It was a revolution, a revolution which, moreover, could not do better. Callejón, Ben Sahar and Ferran Corominas 'slipped' into the starting eleven of Mauricio Pochettino and gave, along with the rest of their team mates, the first three points to Espanyol.

The team played at a high level and was infected by the desire of some players who repeatedly sought the continuity on the field. Pochettino will have a complicate situation in the forthcoming visit of Malaga to Cornella-El Prat. The players up front were perfectly associated and showed a mobility that wasn’t seen before, neither in San Mamés nor against Real Madrid. E.E.
