La liga is just starting, but the players already detected four “sins” that are causing the poor impression left by the team in this start of campaign, especially in the matches against Malaga and RCD Espanyol.

Juan Carlos Valerón, Albert Lopo and Juan Rodríguez have been starters in the first three games of the liga season, they were appointing to the four errors committed by the squad on the pitch and that have caused two defeats in those three matches:

1- Abuse of the direct football: The midfielders neither dictated the pace of the game nor knew what to do with the ball despite having the ball possession. The reason was that Depor has been trying to reach Riki with long balls and take advantage of the secondary plays, but these attempts have been controlled by the rival’s defenses. We must search for the balance between playing with the ball on the ground and searching for the long balls.” Valerón said about this aspect.

Something also confirmed by Juan Rodriguez, “We are abusing with this and is something that we need to adjust. When the team is frequently moving the ball over the ground, then all the players are feeling more comfortable and you can notice their work more often.”

2- The problem with the pressure on the pitch: One of the most emphasised issues by the media, the team is leaving too many holes during the attacks, something that opens the door to possible responses by the rival during the counterattack. Depor needs to put more pressure on the rival’s moves. A problem noticed by Juan Rodriguez, “Against Espanyol, the true is that we never felt comfortable, especially during the first half  , just when they were playing more happily.”

3- A mental problem: On the past season Deportivo was only able to achieve two back-to-back wins, a sign of the adversity at the players’ minds when they are behind in the scoresheet. And it seems the situation will be repeated on this season as Depor wasn’t able to comeback after starting losing the games with Real Madrid and Espanyol, curiously Deportivo tied both games (Vs Madrid even twice) just to fall down in the end.

Lopo was analysing this subject, “If we are worried when we are just playing the third matchday… The true is that the team is hurt because we don’t like to lose, especially at home, but we are adults.” Valerón also gave his opinion about this matter, “One of the most important things is that the team must know that we will live tough moments, and we should know how to overcome them.”

4- The defensive mismatches: Maybe the most worrying of the problems, because the solidity shown on the past season is now fading away during the present campaign. All started on the pre-season as Depor started to lose the games after committing clear errors defending the aerial plays, a clear example of this was the 2-4 defeat at Osasuna after been leading 2-0 at half-time at the Reyno de Navarra.

Now the team has allowed six goals in three matchdays, and still committing the same errors  defending the aerial plays, something demonstrated against Espanyol, Juan Rodriguez admits this problem, “The game was lost due to our own errors, it slipped from our hands in the stationary plays.”
