THE SECOND BEST START FOR DEPOR

06 Oct 2009
Deportivo is living in a Champions League position for the first time in three years, and it’s that the start of season has been the second best in the history of the Galician team: twelve of eighteen possible points added.

This is the second best start in the history of Deportivo at Primera División; the best one occurred on the 2003/2004 campaign as Irureta’s team added fifteen points after the first six matchdays, at the time the team was occupying the second position on the standings and later ended third in la liga. On the season 1996/1997 the Galician side also added twelve points after six games, and also ended third. It’s also the fourth occasion within the last decade in which Deportivo scores at least ten goals after six matches, the previous opportunities were the seasons 2003/2004 (15), 2001/2002 (12) and 1999/2000 (10).

Besides, Depor is occupying a Champions League spot for the first time in three years, the last opportunity occurred on the season 2006/2007 with Joaquin Caparrós as the head coach. It was just anecdotic because it occurred after the first matchday of the liga season as Depor defeated Real Zaragoza at the Riazor (3-2, at the time Depor was third). It’s also the second time in two years that Lotina’s team adds three straight wins at Primera, the previous occasion occurred between matchdays 12 and 14 of the past season: 3-1 Vs Athletic Bilbao, 1-0 at Almeria and 2-0 Vs Malaga.

THE SECRET: THE DEFENCE
It was a discrete start for Deportivo in a defensive sense, the team leaked six goals in the first three games and the situation was similar on the pre-season as Lotina’s side showed lagoons at the back zone, especially defending the set-pieces. But that image has disappeared within the last three weeks as Deportivo has achieved three straight clean sheets.

And this change has occurred since Lotina introduced Manuel Pablo and Diego Colotto in the starting formation, leaving Laure and Zé Castro on the bench. It’s the second time that Lotina achieves three straight clean sheets at Depor, the previous occasion was on the season 2007/2008 between matchdays 32 and 34: 3-0 Vs Athletic Bilbao, 1-0 at Osasuna and 2-0 Vs Barcelona.

Besides, Daniel Aranzubia has reached the mark of 307 minutes without allowing a goal (the last one was scored by Verdú at the Riazor), his historic mark is 357 minutes without leaking a goal and was achieved with Athletic Bilbao between matchdays 15 and 18 of the season 2004/2005, this means that the Basque keeper is 51 minutes away of breaking his best mark at Primera.
