Aranzubia has passed for been whistled at San Mamés to be a candidate for Spain’s national team, all of that in a matter of a year. He’s 51 minutes away of breaking his best mark without leaking a goal. Now he must face Sevilla, one of Depor’s toughest rivals in recent years.

It has been an incredible and fast change in the career of Daniel Aranzubia, a couple of years ago he was heavily criticised after every game played with Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés, and ex-Depor coach Joaquin Caparrós even replaced him with a goalie that was coming from Segunda División B (Armando). That point marked his exit from the club and then he decided to move forward signing for Deportivo after meeting with Lotina in a mall.

And time has demonstrated that it was the right move, because in La Coruña the Basque keeper found the stability that he needed, in just one year he gained the confidence of the fans and earned several awards, including the RCDLC.com player of the season 2008/2009 award. Even his name has been considered for Spain’s national team, one of the candidates to clinch the title in the upcoming World Cup 2010, his possible inclusion was already admitted by coach Vicente Del Bosque.

On Thursday newspaper La Voz de Galicia was trying to find the reason for Aranzubia’s change, for it they consulted the previous coaches that worked with the ex-Athletic goalie. Starting with Koldo Aguirre, who was the coordinator of Athletic’s youth teams at the time of Aranzubia’s arrival, “He was a formal and serious kid, he was a kid turning into a man. For me it was unfair how San Mamés treated him, he didn’t deserve that treatment from the public. I knew that Dani, despite the place where he was going, would do a great job, because it wasn’t a normal thing what happened to him on here, but those are the circumstances you always find in football.” He said.

For Iñaki Sánz, the coach that took Aranzubia to the U-20 World Cup in Nigeria, the key is the shy personality of Aranzubia, “Dani has been at Athletic and has lived his good and bad moments. But it’s now when he is offering what he should offer before, and that can only be achieved through the confidence of the coach. This is more evident in Dani. Others players have an easy manner. As example, during bad times Casillas never keeps his head down, but looking forward. Dani is more cautious, he waits a little longer, is more sensitive and I think he needs to hear it from the coach, his team mates and the public. The solution of leaving to Deportivo was fundamental for him.”

Javier Clemente, who was the coach of Athletic during the season 2005/06, was saying that Aranzubia doesn’t have a chance ahead of the next World Cup, “I didn’t notice any problem when he was with me. He did a great job. Physically, he is prepared for the task. I don’t think he can reach now the national team, because the current coach has three clear choices and that’s difficult to change. The coach has Casillas, Reina and the third one is a young boy (Diego López)”

During the season 2004/2005, Ernesto Valverde was the coach of Athletic and the keeper spent three straight matches without allowing a goal (between matchdays 15 and 17). It was until Numancia’s Tevenet scored a goal at minute 64 of the game played at Los Pajaritos that the positive streak of Aranzubia ended: 357 minutes without leaking a goal.

Now, and after achieving three clean sheets within the last three liga games of Depor, the keeper is having the chance to beat his personal mark, for it he will need to spend 51 minutes without leaking a goal during Saturday’s game at the Riazor. The hard thing is that it has to do it against Sevilla FC, exactly one of the rivals that has scored more goals against Depor within the last seasons.

Despite the marks and all the talking, Aranzubia says that for him the important thing is to add points, as he told to La Voz, “Of course I like to end the games without allowing a goal, but I am not obsessed by any record. The important thing of not leaking a goal is that it means to add at least one point, and in the mayor part of occasions it means three points, as it as occurred in our more recent matches.”
