8 AND 1 FOR SERGIO

13 Nov 2009
On Tuesday Sergio missed his first penalty at Deportivo; the Catalan slipped at the moment of hitting the ball and sent it out. The goal would have put him at the same height of Djalminha in terms of goals from the penalty spot.

Sergio has proven to be a reliable penalty taker for Deportivo, until Tuesday the ex-Espanyol midfielder was having a 100% of effectiveness with eight goals scored  in eight attempts from the penalty spot. But he broke his perfect mark in the Copa clash against Real Murcia (same day of his 33rd birthday). And it was a terrible week for him as he was also sent out during last weekend game at Getafe, which means to miss the liga clash at the Riazor against Atletico Madrid.

In the play of the penalty, he followed the same routine than in past occasions as he used the paradinha, technique invented by Pele. That strategy consists in running and stopping before touching the ball, then he looks to the keeper and decides where to put the ball, the problem in this occasion was that the Catalan slipped at the precise moment of connecting the ball, which forced him to miss the target.

It was the first penalty that Sergio attempted in Copa Del Rey, his previous eight opportunities from the penalty spot were taken in la liga competition. If the Catalan would have scored that goal, he would have reached Djalminha in the third place of Depor’s scorers from the penalty spot.
