THE FIFTH BEST START IN LIGA

16 Nov 2009
The period considered as “start of la liga” has ended as ten matchdays have been already disputed, and Deportivo has fulfilled its fifth best historic start thanks to the six triumphs added in the competition.

Those six wins were against Malaga FC (1-0, matchday 02), Xérez CD (3-0, matchday 04), Villarreal (1-0, matchday 05), Tenerife FC (1-0, matchday 06), Sevilla FC (1-0, matchday 07) and Getafe (2-0, matchday 10). Depor also achieved a draw in the period against Sporting Gijón (1-1, matchday 09). Two games meant a narrow defeat: Real Madrid (2-3, matchday 01) and RCD Espanyol (2-3, matchday 03), finally the disaster of the period was the 0-4 setback at Valladolid (matchday 08).

A thing to notice is the +5 in Depor’s goal difference, which is the best balance since the one had during the season 2003/2004 (+11). An important thing for this is the work done at defence, and it’s that Depor has already clinched six clean sheets after ten matchdays, a number only at the height of Real Madrid, while Barcelona (5) and Sevilla (5) are behind the Madrilenians and the Galicians.

In terms of statistics, Deportivo has demonstrated to be a team that follows the fair-play rules, because the Galicians have only committed 137 fouls, which represents the second lowest number at Primera, only surpassed by Barcelona (131)

However and despite been the fifth best offensive line at Primera División with 14 goals scored, Depor is presenting some worrying statistics in attack, because Lotina’s team has only fulfilled 114 attempts to score after 10 games (11.4 per match), which is the fifth lowest in la liga (The worst is Xérez with 88). The situation is the same in terms of shots on goal, because Depor’s present the fifth worst record with only 35 shots on goals (3.5 per game).

The 19 points added by Deportivo in the start of season 2009/2010 means the fifth best mark in the history of the club, a number only surpassed by the 22 points added during the campaigns 1996/97 & 2003/04.and the 20 of the seasons 2000/01 and 2001/02. Curiously, the present numbers are even better than the ones of the season 1999/00, year in which Depor clinched its only title in liga.
