THE RISE OF JUANMA

08 Mar 2006
Juanma arrived in the summer as a backup for Andrade and Coloccini, but in a few months he has demonstrated that he isn't just an alternative. He even shares the second spot on the list of top goal scorers.

Juanma Delgado spent four seasons with Racing before his arrival at Deportivo.  During that time he scored three goals in 89 matches, but at Deportivo he has found the net on four occasions in only 19 games, an improvement that for the defender is just a matter of good luck: "This is like any good period that every man goes through.  In other years I had more occasions to score and in the end I couldn't do it."

His words demonstrate his humble character.  He has given trouble to Andrade and Coloccini in order to be part of the starting lineup and the latter even asked for a transfer since he thought his place in the team was in danger.  But Juanma still believes he’s not really a starter in the squad: "I didn't believe it when I came here and I still believe that I am not."

The Huelva-born player thinks the secret to his success is the magic words that Caparr??s always preaches: work and daily sacrifice, something he confessed were his main characteristics.  "I spent a lot of years playing and working in the same way, and I can tell you that I’ve always enjoyed the coach's confidence."

Juanma signed a contract for two years, but at 29 he's optimistic about his future and even dreams of an extension at Deportivo. "Since the beginning I’ve felt a strong connection with the people and that is a positive sensation.  People see that I like to work and they appreciate that. I hope to spend a long time here and I would love to prolong my contract so I can be a fundamental part of this new Deportivo."

For the moment, Caparr??s trusts Juanma, and with Andrade out for the rest of the season, he will have to continue demonstrating that he isn't just the backup option that everybody was waiting to see. The contribution of the Andalucian defender must be one of the keys if Depor wants to return to European competition next season.
