TRYING TO ACHIEVE THE FIRST HOME WIN OF THE YEAR

09 Mar 2006
The third month of the year started a few days ago and Deportivo are still without a home victory in 2006. Coach Caparr??s has admitted that this situation is annoying for the players, but for the moment he hasn't been able to find the solution to the curse of the Riazor.

Last season was Depor's worst home campaign in 10 years, the team only won 25 points thanks to six wins and seven draws. This season's numbers are also disturbing, as the squad has only been able to achieve 16 points in 13 matches. Four victories, four draws and five defeats conforms the poor record at the Riazor.

The most alarming issue is the scoring statistic, in the last campaign Depor scored only 25 goals at home, the worst number since the 1991/92 campaign (24). This season seems to be following the same road, so far Depor has only scored 14 goals and accumulates five matches without knowing the sweet taste of victory.

This lack of effectiveness is precisely what's affecting the European options of Deportivo, Caparr??s knows it and he has been trying to change the situation. In the last five home matches he has tried different offensive formations. V?ctor on the right and Munitis on the left were his preferred choices for the wings while several combinations have been tested in the centre: Senel-Arizmendi, Rub?©n-Arizmendi and Trist??n-Arizmendi.

But the experiments aren't working out and apparently Caparr??s will present a new formation tomorrow. Gallardo could make his debut as a starter replacing V?ctor and the duo Trist??n-Arizmendi could perform in the striking zone with Munitis on the left. However, the combination Trist??n-Rub?©n was  also tried in yesterday's training.

The goals from set-pieces could also be a key to the return to victory's road, five of the last eight goals scored by Depor occurred in stationary plays and Caparr??s knows that the squad will need any resource available for the match against Real Sociedad and also for the crucial confrontation with Espanyol in the Copa.

If Depor doesn't achieve the three points on Saturday it will be the sixth consecutive game at home without a victory, a situation that hasn't occured since the 1997/98 season when the squad achieved only 4 points between matchday 06 and 16: Valladolid (1-3), Celta (1-1), Merida (0-1), Espanyol (1-1), Atl?©tico Madrid (2-2) and Real Sociedad (1-1). Curiously the Basque squad will once again be the rival that will test the Galician's capacity to react, a fact that also happened after the disastrous 3-8 against Monaco in the Champions League a couple of seasons ago.

THE FINAL OF THE COPA WILL BE PLAYED IN MADRID
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that the final in the Copa del Rey will be played in Madrid on March 12th. The stadium is still to be known, the choices for the moment are Real Madrid's Santiago Bernab?©u and Atl?©tico's Vicente Calder??n. In this form the dream of celebrating the final in Riazor as a centenario party is over. Depor will meet Espanyol on Wednesday and the winner of the series will face Zaragoza in the final.
