TARGETING THE LAST TWO GAMES OF 2009

09 Dec 2009
No matter the setback with Barcelona, Depor could end the year in a Champions League place, but for that it must defeat Almeria on Sunday and especially Valencia in the last liga game of 2009.

The defeat against Barcelona eliminated the chances of breaking the record of points after thirteen liga matchdays, but not the European aspirations of Deportivo for this liga campaign, mainly because the three aspirants to enter into the top six positions (Sporting Gijón, Athletic Bilbao and Getafe) also lost in the weekend, which means that Lotina’s team still has an advantage of five points over the seventh place in the table, tough it’ also true that sixth place RCD Mallorca won its game and is now located only one point behind Depor.

But it’s also true that Deportivo still close to the Champions League zone, because the surprising draw of Sevilla against 15th place Real Valladolid is keeping the Andalusians, and the last spot to qualify to the Champions League tournament , just two points above the Galicians. Even the third place, which now belongs to Valencia, is at reach as they only have three more points than Deportivo.

Checking the calendar left on this year, it can be seen that there are a few direct confrontations between the teams targeting the European competitions, like the visit of Sevilla to Sporting Gijón or the home game of the Andalusians against Getafe; but the team with the hardest calendar is Valencia, because they will host Real Madrid on Saturday and then will visit the Riazor.

Meanwhile Depor will be visiting troubled UD Almeria on Sunday (17h00 CET), which means that the Galicians will not only secure the Europa league spot with two wins in the last two matches of 2009, but could also end the year in a Champions League place.
