TARGETING THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

16 Dec 2009
Depor could end a year in a Champions League position for the first time in five years, but first it has to defeat Valencia FC at the Riazor and wait to see RCD Mallorca failing at Malaga FC.

The year 2004 ended with Javier Irureta’s Deportivo occupying the third place in la liga with 33 points added in 17 matchdays, that was the last occasion in which the Galicians ended a year among the top-four positions. In the year 2006 Joaquin Caparrós’ Depor reached the Christmas break with 29 points in 17 matches, which was enough to end the year at the 6th spot, that was the last time that Deportivo ended a year occupying a European spot.

Now Miguel Angel Lotina’s Deportivo will try to repeat the scenario, but for the goal it has to defeat first Valencia FC on Sunday’s meeting at the Riazor, while it must wait to see current fifth place RCD Mallorca failing in its visit to penultimate place Malaga FC. A combination in both games could leave Depor fourth in the table with 29 points.

But Deportivo could also end the year at the 7th spot, for it Lotina’s team would have to lose at home and Athletic Bilbao would have to defeat Osasuna at the Cathedral. The true is that the three teams involved in this fight aren’t facing an easy game, because Depor hasn’t defeated Valencia at home since la liga 2003/2004, while Mallorca has only won two times at Malaga. Meanwhile, Osasuna has always been a tough opponent at San Mamés.
