DEPOR IN THE FIRST ROUND

26 Jan 2010
Deportivo has completed its third best first round within the last ten seasons; despite the injury cases, the important thing is that the team has almost assured the permanence and beyond this, it is a solid candidate for the European places.

The first round in la liga 2009/2010 ended during the weekend; and Deportivo is currently occupying the fifth place at the standings with 34 points added after 19 matchdays. Lotina’s team is currently tied in points with RCD Mallorca and is separated from the Champions League zone only by the goal difference (+12 for Mallorca and +4 for Depor).

Depor has won ten matches: 1-0 Vs Malaga (matchday 02), 3-0 at CD Xérez (matchday 04), 1-0 Vs Villarreal (matchday 05), 1-0 at Tenerife (matchday 06), 1-0 Vs Sevilla (matchday 07), 2-0 at Getafe (matchday 10), 2-1 Vs Atletico Madrid (matchday 11), 1-0 at Racing Santander (matchday 12), 1-0 Vs Osasuna (matchday 17) and 3-1 Vs Athletic Bilbao (matchday 19).

The team also clinched four draws: 1-1 Vs Sporting Gijón (matchday 09), 1-1 at UD Almeria (matchday 14), 0-0 Vs Valencia (matchday 15) and 0-0 at Real Zaragoza (matchday 16), while the team only suffered five defeats: 2-3 at Real Madrid (matchday 01), 2-3 Vs RCD Espanyol (matchday 03), 0-4 at Real Valladolid (matchday 08), 1-3 Vs Barcelona (matchday 13) and 0-2 at RCD Mallorca (matchday 18).

Lotina’s Deportivo scored 23 goals in the period, which is only the 10th best mark at Primera División and the worst among the top eight clubs in la liga. At the same time, the Galicians only allowed 19 goals in the period, which is the fourth best mark in the competition. These numbers demonstrate the importance of a solid defence, and it’s that Depor clinched ten clean sheets in nineteen matchdays. A curious fact to emphasise is that the team has scored eight of the twenty-three goals (the 35% of the total) within the final twenty minutes of the games.

About the record at the Riazor, Depor added 20 of its 34 points (59%) playing at home, which is the sixth best record in la liga. Away from home the team added 14 points, which is the fifth best mark at Primera División. These numbers demonstrate that the performance of the team has been balanced.

Meanwhile, the battle for Europe will continue to be tough within the next weeks: sixth place Sevilla is just one point behind the Galicians, while seventh place Getafe and eighth place Athletic Bilbao are four points behind Deportivo. Also, Depor has exactly the double of points than Tenerife, team that’s occupying the last spot in the relegation zone. Historically, 42 points is considered as the mark for the salvation, meaning that Lotina’s team only needs eight more points to secure the permanence.

Comparing the current numbers with past seasons, it is possible to realise that this is the third best first round of Depor within the last ten seasons. Only the seasons 2000/01 and 2003/04 meant more points for the Galicians after the first nineteen matches:
