THE WORST TEAM IN THE SECOND ROUND

17 Feb 2010
The second round is just starting, but it calls the attention the fact that Deportivo is the worst team in the period with just one point added after three games and with a -4 in the goal average. The worst start since the last promotion to Primera.

Deportivo is living its worst moment on the season, both in a statistical sense as in terms of level of play. Lotina’s team has only added one of the nine points disputed in the second round (1-3 Vs Real Madrid, 0-0 at Malaga and 0-2 at RCD Espanyol), which converts the Galician squad into the worst team of the second round.

So far, only Real Madrid has added the nine points of the period, while relegation-troubled teams Malaga CF and Real Zaragoza have added seven. At the other side of this table, Depor and Sporting Gijón have just added a point, but the Asturians have a -3 goal difference, while Depor has a -4.

Since Depor’s last promotion to Primera División, only in three previous opportunities the Galician team has only added one point after the first three matches of the second round: 2005/2006 (goal difference -2), 1996/97 (-2) and 1991/92 (-2). Taking in mind the goal differences, then it’s possible to say that this is the worst start of a second round within the last twenty years.

The main problem for Depor continues to be the goals, and it’s that Deportivo and Racing Santander are the only two Primera clubs that have only scored one goal since the second round started. Even CD Xérez, the last place in the table and the next rival of the Galicians, has scored more goals in the period (4).

At least the good news for Depor is that the other contenders for the European places are also failing; Athletic Bilbao has only added three points in the second round, while Getafe has only clinched two. Villarreal has only earned three, same number than RCD Mallorca. Only Sevilla FC seems to be taking advantage of the situation as they have clinched six, reason why the Andalusians are now occupying the fourth spot.
