TWO MONTHS WITHOUT AN AWAY GOAL

25 Feb 2010
Deportivo accumulates 376 minutes without scoring a goal playing away from the Riazor, which is the fourth worst streak since the last promotion to Primera División. The last time that Depor spent five straight away games without scoring was in 1966.

Lotina’s Deportivo hasn’t scored an away goal in liga since December 13 of the past year, at that moment Pablo Alvarez was heading a pass of Valerón to equalize the game against UD Almeria (74’, matchday 14). Since that day the Galician team  has ended scoreless in its four last away games in liga: 0-0 at Real Zaragoza (matchday 16), 0-2 at RCD Mallorca (matchday 18), 0-0 at Malaga (matchday 21) and 0-2 at RCD Espanyol (matchday 22).

In resume, Depor accumulates 376 minutes without scoring an away goal in liga, mark that’s only the fourth worst since the last promotion to Primera División back on the season 1991/92. The worst streak on this period occurred just one year ago as Lotina’ Deportivo spent 436 minutes without scoring an away goal: 1-0 at Osasuna (matchday 33, season 2007/08, goal by Sergio, 65’), 0-1 at Zaragoza (matchday 35, 2007/08), 0-1 at Atletico (matchday 37, 2007/08), 0-1 at Villarreal (matchday 02, 2008/09), 0-0 at Osasuna (matchday 04, 2008/09) and 2-4 at Valencia (matchday 05, 2008/09, own goal of Moretti, 11’)

To find the second worst streak is necessary to go back to the season 1995/96, at the time the coach was John Benjamin Toshack and the team spent 419 minutes without scoring an away goal in liga: 1-2 at Real Sociedad (matchday 06, goal by Radchenko, 38’), 0-1 at Atletico Madrid (matchday 08), 0-0 at Sevilla (matchday 10), 0-0 at Celta (matchday 12), 0-1 at Athletic Bilbao (matchday 13) and 2-0 at Merida (matchday 15, the first goal by Aldana, 15’).

And in order to find the third worst streak in the period, it is necessary to go back to the returning season to Primera (1991/92). At the time the coach was Marco Antonio Boronat and Depor spent 405 minutes without scoring an away goal the in liga competition: 2-1 at Atletico Madrid (matchday 18, second goal by Villa, 76’), 0-1 at Tenerife (matchday 21), 0-2 at Valladolid (matchday 23), 0-0 at Sevilla (matchday 25), 0-1 at Real Madrid (matchday 27) and 1-4 at Barcelona (matchday 29, goal by Djukic, 29’).

To mention that since the last promotion to Primera División, Depor has never spent five straight away games without scoring a goal. The last time that Deportivo spent more than four away matches at Primera without adding a goal was between the seasons 1964/95 and 1966/67, at the time the Galician squad accumulated twelve straight away games scoreless and in both campaigns the team ended relegated.

Curiously, and despite that Depor is living this dark moment playing away from the Riazor, to mention that in the middle of this negative streak the team of Lotina has made two complicate visits in Copa Del Rey, and in both opportunities the team not even scored goal, but achieved the victory: 2-1 at Valencia (last-16 round), and 1-0 at Sevilla (quarterfinals).
