REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 3 – TENERIFE 1 (LIGA)

07 Mar 2010
Good result, bad game. That is the resume of the match saw at the Riazor. Depor had big problems to create scoring opportunities and was lucky enough to capitalise its only three shots on target to neutralize the opening goal of Tenerife.

BEFORE THE GAME
As some reporters were suspecting, Lotina was playing with two strikers but was keeping the 4-2-3-1 formation, with Rodolfo Bodipo as the central attacker and with Adrián performing on the right wing, while Pablo Alvarez was the playmaker of the squad.

The rest was the expected formation, Aranzubia was the goalie, Manuel Pablo the right-back defender, Laure was covering the left side, while Colotto and Lopo were the central defenders. At midfield territory, Juan Rodriguez and Antonio Tomás were the two pivotes. Finally, Andrés Guardado was attacking from the left wing.

Tenerife was presenting a novelty in the expected starting eleven, because coach Oltra put right-back defender Hector Sanchez on the right wing. The rest of the squad was the expected one, with Alejandro Alfaro and ex-Levante Juan Francisco Martínez Modesto ‘Nino’ as the main hope for the goals.

FIRST HALF
New poor first part of a Deportivo that was clueless in attack, there was no connection between midfield and attack and therefore the defenders were forced to release long throws that were easily stopped by the rivals. Neither Tenerife did anything special; that’s why the goals scored in this half were product of isolated plays that never represented what was really happening on the pitch.

The first attempt to score from the locals was a free-kick of Guardado, but Juan Rodriguez didn’t find the ball at the far post (2’), the response of Tenerife was a cross of Nino that Alfaro couldn’t head on target. Both teams were having problems to control the game, Depor wasn’t having a clear idea about how to reach the opposite goal and its approximations were all reserved to free-kick and corner-kick attempts trying to send a cross searching for the head of Lopo or Colotto.

Another of the resources used by Depor were long throws searching for Bodipo, but Tenerife’s defensive zone was easily clearing those attempts.  Neither Tenerife was having clarity in attack, reason why the first fifteen minutes were boring and without any excitement.

And the surprise came at minute 17, because Tenerife scored the first goal in its first clear approximation into Depor’s area, Sicilia sent a drilling cross from the right and Juan Luis Hens ‘Juanlu’ was alone inside the area, he had enough time to turn off and cross Aranzubia from close range. In the next minutes the fans started to lose the patience with referee José Luis González González, who booked Juan Rodriguez for an obstruction, while Alfaro only saw a yellow until he committed his third foul on the game.

Depor never reacted and actually Tenerife was the side controlling the game, Laure was having big problems on the left with Ayoze and Pablo Sicilia, side from where the main danger was arriving. Besides, there was no connection between the two pivotes and the wingers, main fact that explains why the aerial game was the only resource of the Galicians.

And the equalised arrived just when Depor was playing worse. Antonio Tomás released a free-kick sending the ball into the area, the defensive line cleared the danger and Guardado got the ball and sent a new cross from the left that Juan Rodriguez headed into the roof of the goal. It is the third goal in liga for the Andalusian.

Despite the goal, Lotina wasn’t happy at all with the performance of his team and ordered a modification. It was the entry of Valerón for Bodipo, who was whistled by the fans in the way out and that later had a discussion with Depor’s doctor and with Ribera on the bench, the entry of El Flaco motivated the squad and now Depor was having the initiative, but without creating a clear chance.

And actually, an error of Valerón almost cost the second goal of Tenerife, because the Canarian lost the ball at midfield, then Richi drilled the ball to Nino, who faced Aranzubia one-on-one, but between the late arrival of Colotto and the reaction of Depor’s keeper the ball was sent to corner-kick (42’)  To mention that Adrián and Pablo Alvarez were alternating the striker’s position after the exit of Bodipo, who ended the half having a personal conversation with Ribera after both teams went to the changing rooms.

SECOND HALF
The final part started with the same dynamic, with a Depor that was unable to create anything in attack and with a Tenerife that was trying to capitalise a counterattack. The first attempt in the half was for the visitors as Nino found the ball inside the area, but his shot went over the crossbar (50’).

And as it happened in the first part, Depor’s second goal came in the most unexpected moment. Adrián received a pass from Guardado and was trying to enter into the area against the opposition of two rivals, then he slightly lost the ball and saw Andrés Guardado coming from behind, then he left the ball to the Mexican and then the ex-Atlas released a drilling and crossed shot from the edge of the area that Aragoneses couldn’t stop. It is the third goal in liga for the Mexican.

Tenerife tried to equalise the game and had two opportunities, first through a header of Alfaro that missed the target (60’), and one minute later Richi attempted from mid-distance, but the ball went over the crossbar. Then Pablo Alvarez was replaced by Juan Dominguez, the Galician youngster was joining Antonio Tomas at midfield and Juan Rodriguez moved to the right wing.

And when it seemed that Depor was going to suffer Colotto appeared to score the third goal; the Argentine central defender joined the attack after Guardado took a corner-kick, The Mexican sent a cross into the edge of the area and two defenders of Tenerife couldn’t clear the danger, then the Argentine found the ball and drilled it into the near post of Aragoneses, who should have made the save. It is also his third goal in liga, curiously Colotto was the one that scored the winning goal of the first round match.

The third goal defined the game and the Galicians seemed content with the result, while Tenerife never gave up and sought for more goals until the end, though their only clear chances came with a dangerous cross of Omar that was stopped by Aranzubia (86’), and a cross of Nino that Richi didn’t find (87’). Before that, Lassad returned and played for the final ten minutes, but the Tunisian didn’t have any opportunity.

AFTER THE GAME
Despite the result, Deportivo gave a "grey" impression as it left a lot of doubts at the Riazor. And it’s that the worst visitor in liga caused a lot of troubles and even took the lead in the scoresheet. Lotina even changed the squad at minute 38. In the end the Galician team was effective enough to capitalise its only three shots on target to achieve the second back-to-back win on the season after the one over Atletico Madrid (2-1).

The win puts Depor back in the fifth place waiting to know the results of RCD Mallorca and Sevilla FC, this last club is occupying the fourth position and is the next rival of Depor (Sanchez Pizjuán, Saturday, 22h00 CET), therefore a decisive clash for the last spot at the Champions League.
