DREAMING OF EUROPE

16 Mar 2010
With the permanence already achieved; Deportivo can now focus in ending the season among the first six places. The squad still has to face five direct rivals, but the players are optimistic about their chances.

Things became more tighten after the results on matchday 26; neither Valencia FC, Sevilla FC, RCD Mallorca, Deportivo nor Athletic Bilbao were able to add the three points, which allowed Getafe FC and Villarreal FC to reduce the distance with the European zone to six points. Now the difference between the 3rd and the 9th spots is only of eleven points, and with twelve matchdays still to be played anything can happen.

The current situation at the table:

Valencia is the team in the best position, but it has one of the worst calendars, because it still has to face five of the first nine places, and four of them in a row: at Mallorca (matchday 31), Vs Athletic Bilbao (matchday 32), at Real Madrid (matchday 33) and Vs Deportivo (matchday 34), while at matchday 37 it has to pay a visit to Villarreal.

Also Mallorca has to face five rivals at the top: Vs Barcelona (matchday 29), Vs Valencia (matchday 31), At Athletic Bilbao (matchday 35), Vs Real Madrid (matchday 36) and at Deportivo (matchday 37). Same situation than Depor: Vs Getafe (matchday 29), at Barcelona (matchday 32), at Valencia (matchday
34), Vs Mallorca (matchday 37) and at Athletic Bilbao (matchday 38).

But the club in the most complicate situation is Athletic Bilbao, with six matches still to be played against the best nine clubs: Vs Getafe (matchday 27), at Barcelona (matchday 30), at Valencia (matchday 32), Vs Mallorca (matchday 35), at Real Madrid (matchday 37) and Vs Deportivo (matchday 38). Meanwhile, Villarreal  will only face four direct rivals: Vs Sevilla (matchday 29), at Getafe (matchday 32), Vs Barcelona (matchday 35) and Vs Valencia (matchday 37).

More easy seems to be the situation for Sevilla, side that only has to face two of the top nine clubs: at Villarreal (matchday 29) and Vs Barcelona (matchday 37), but the Andalusians still have to think of the Champions League and the final in Copa Del Rey against Atletico Madrid.

THE OPINION OF THE PLAYERS
Depor’s players are trying to keep the same mentality of the whole season, they are aware of the possibilities, but prefer to be cautious in public, as one of the captains, Juan Carlos Valerón, said to reporters, “To dream of Europe? I don’t like that word. We are hopeful of keeping the same level, to make good games for our fans, especially to see them enjoying.”

Same is the opinion of the younger players, as the case of Laure, “Let’s see if we are able to be strong at home and win, starting with the next game; this in order to follow the same line and end this pretty season in the way we want. But we must continue thinking game by game, a formula that has been working well..”

Almost the same speech of the younger player at the squad, Juan Dominguez, “A lot of liga still ahead and we must continue in the same way, thinking of the next game, nothing more. This is a matter of been going match after match. We still dreaming, because we have been up there since the start of the season and there is where we want to stay. Why can’t be achieve that?”
