The point added against Sevilla FC has certified the continuity of Deportivo at Primera for the season 2010/11, which will be Depor’s 20th straight campaign at the elite of the Spanish football. Only five clubs can presume of that.

Nobody in the Spanish la liga has suffered a relegation to Segunda División after adding 42 points, that’s why this mark is considered as the goal in order to certify the permanence. And Deportivo secured that goal after achieving a draw at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium against Sevilla (1-1). In this way the Galician club has confirmed his continuity at Primera for the upcoming season 2010/11.

It will be the 20th straight campaign of Depor between the elite of the Spanish football; in those 20 years 42 different clubs have passed through Primera and only five clubs can presume of not have suffered the relegation within the period: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia and Deportivo. Since the last promotion, Depor has played 718 games in liga, with a mark of 326 victories, 194 draws and 198 defeats.

The next campaign will be the number 41 of Depor at Primera División, while in the previous seasons the Galician team spent 37 campaigns at Segunda, 1 at Segunda B and 1 at Tercera. The last promotion to Primera was achieved on June 9th, 1991 in a playoff series against Real Murcia.

The hero of that series was Zoran Stojadinovic, who scored two goals in the returning leg. He was having a retrospective view at newspaper La Opinión A Coruña about the event, “At that time nobody would thought that it would last so many time at Primera. If we go back twenty years, nobody would imagine what the team was going to achieve. The fans lived that episode with a lot of heart. It wasn’t just one more game, but a matter of life and death. Congratulations to Depor and its president. Let’s hope they will stay there for another twenty years.”

Depor’s returning campaign to Primera was a real suffering (1991/92); coach Marco Antonio Boronat never found the solutions to the problems and the team barely achieved eight wins on the liga season, the lowest mark within the last twenty years. The first game of the returning season to the division occurred on August 31st, 2001 as Depor visited Valencia. The team lost 1-2 and the lineup was: Liaño - Djukic, Lopez Recarte (Villa 29'), Ribera, Albistegui - Sabin Bilbao, Kanatlarovski, Kiriakov, Fran - Claudio, Uralde (Mariano Hoyas 62').

In that game, midfielder Sabin Bilbao scored the first goal of Depor at Primera after been absent for twenty years.  He was remembering the game, “I always remember and will do it for my whole life. I was part of the promotion and it was pretty, and later to score the first goal in the comeback to Primera, the truth is that it was exciting.”

Later Arsenio Iglesias, the coach that achieved the promotion, had to comeback and save the team during an exciting relegation playoff series against Real Betis. What followed was the most brilliant period in the history of the club, which included one title in liga, two in Copa Del Rey, three Supercopas and fourth runner-ups positions in la liga.
