DEPORTIVO IN APRIL

01 Apr 2010
April is the last train to Europe; after March’s breakdown Deportivo needs to recover the lost ground in the quest for Europe; but it will have to overcome three complicate visits plus two new tests against rivals at mid-table.

Deportivo only added four points in the month of March and now needs a quick reaction if the Galicians don’t want to lose the last train to Europe. And that reaction means to add points in the visits to three big clubs in la liga plus to not fail again at the Riazor against mid-table rivals

April will start with the visit to the unstable Atletico Madrid, the “Dr. Hyde-Mr. Jekyll” team of la liga that plays a great game just to lose in the next one. The Madrilenians still alive in Copa Del Rey and in the UEFA Europa League (today they face Valencia as part of the quarterfinals), but right now they are eight points behind the European competitions, reason why this match is a final for both sides.

Then Depor will host Racing Santander at the Riazor, currently the Cantabrians are just six points above the relegation, but lately have shown some reaction as they have only  been defeated in one opportunity within the last five liga encounters, streak that included a goalless draw at Mestalla against Valencia.

Three days later Deportivo plays a midweek match as it visits the all-mighty FC Barcelona; the Catalans are in a tough battle with Real Madrid to clinch the title in liga and are searching to repeat the Champions League trophy. Barca is living a solid moment with four straight wins in la liga.

UD Almeria will be the next test for Deportivo; the Andalusians will probably reach the match with the permanence already secured, something that’s possible since they are the third best team in the second round as it has added eighteen points within the ten matches played in the period, mark only surpassed by Real Madrid (30) and Barcelona (25).

The month ends with the visit to Valencia FC, side that’s close to clinch a UEFA Champions League spot and that still fighting in the Europa League. Depor doesn’t achieve a liga win at Mestalla since the season 2004/05, but already did it in Copa Del Rey at the start of this year (2-1)
