REVIEW: YOUNG BOYS 1 – DEPORTIVO 0 (UHRENCUP)

21 Jul 2010
First defeat on the pre-season as Depor lost the first semifinal in the Uhrencup; Rochela was sent off and the Galicians had to play for almost an hour with one man less.

Lotina sent a 4-2-3-1 lineup, with three new signings making their debut: Michel, Urreta and Saúl. Manu was defending the goal since Aranzubia was out injured, captain Manuel Pablo was the right-back, Rochela and Lopo were the central defenders, while Raul Garcia performed at the left side.

Juan Rodriguez and Juan Dominguez composed the duo at midfield, Michel was the playmaker, Saul covered the right wing, Uruguayan Urreta attacked from the left side and Lassad was the central attacker.

The rival was Swiss club BSC Young Boys, club that ended second during the past edition of the Swiss Super League. One of the most notorious players at that team was Ivorian Seydou Doumbia, who was the top-scorer in the Swiss league within the past two seasons, but he was just transferred to CSKA Moscow.

The actions started with Deportivo having the ball possession and the first opportunities to score, at minute 5 Raul released a cross from the left that Lassad headed wide, then Michel tested from long-distance, but keeper Marco Wölfli cleared the danger (12’). Young Boys reacted with two straight shots from striker Marco Schneuwly, but Manu saved both occasions (16 & 22’).

Depor seemed to be dominating the game, with a vertical attack composed by Urreta, Lassad and Saul, but then a key moment arrived at minute 38. First referee Patrick Graf didn’t whistle what appeared to be a clear penalty over Uruguayan Urreta, and in the next play Rochela was sent off after challenging Schneuwly as he was going to face Manu one-on-one.

Just two minutes later Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka was scoring the lonely goal in the game. After the goal there was no reaction from Deportivo. In the second part Lotina made several substitutions, including the debut of Yves Desmarets.  The Basque coach tried to recompose the defensive line with the entry of Aythami for Saul, the Canarian joined Lopo at the centre of the defense.

Meanwhile, the entries of Adrian and Riki tried to refresh an attacking line that seemed promising within the first minutes, but nothing changed as Depor didn’t create clear scoring opportunities. Neither Young Boys did too much to increase the difference in the scoresheet. Now Depor is going to face the loser of the clash between Stuttgart and Twente (Friday, 18h00 CET, third place match).
