Q&A WITH ANTONIO TOMAS

30 Jul 2010
Cantabrian midfielder Antonio Tomás talked to Depor Sport and analysed the goals for the new liga season; he also tried to explain the downward spiral of last season.
Q: What are your sensations in this start of the pre-season?
A: Right now I believe we are a little tired, because the team is training each day in a double shift, besides we´ve played against rivals with more time training compared to us, however the pre-season is going as we expected.
Q: Do you believe that your role inside the team is going to change as the coach is planning to switch the system?
A: No, I don’t think it will be different with a 1-4-3-3. Right now I only think of been calm, training at the top and trying to be a starter in the first matchday.
Q: But it isn’t the same to have another pivote alongside you than to be forced to cover the whole pitch…
A: Clearly it isn’t the same, but neither is something to be worried. We still don’t know who is going to play, so for the moment I’m only focused in my preparation and to do the right things no matter what the system is.
Q: Were things tough in this first part of the pre-season?
A: For me yes, because I don’t like to be away from home, and we spent one week away, so the pre-seasons are always very long for me, but we need to be used to it. We still have to play some games and must give our best.
Q: It seemed that last season was too long for the players, were you exhausted in the last part?
A: The fact of having too many injuries forced me to play many games, but surely I will love to play another season as the past one, taking part in so many games and counting for the coach.
Q: Do you feel like a starter?
A: I feel as a starter and as a substitute, all at the same time. This is a team where all the players are important and are able to have many minutes.
Q: How do you see the new incorporations?
A: They’re fine, wishing to help. I believe they are very good players, people that can help and that can bring a lot of things, especially people that can bring freshness to the squad, which was something that we missed on the past year. They are young, men that want to demonstrate things and that are confident in achieving triumphs.
Q: Besides, they offer more offensive alternatives…
A: Yes, they have many skills and offer other characteristics. Michel is a dynamic player; Urreta has velocity; “Desma “ (Desmarets) brings the experience… Each one has different skills that will be useful in the new season.
Q: Can this team aspire to other things?
A: As it happens each year, the only aspiration that we have is the permanence, to spend the season without suffering, and anything else will be welcomed. But what we need to do is to start from the basic objective, which is to be at Primera División.
Q: What was the cause for the blackout at the end of the past season?
A: I don’t know. It was a sum of several things that affected us. During the past first round we worked harder in order to occupy the first positions, and maybe we later pay the price as the injuries appeared. We were too tired, nerves came out because things weren’t working out, and at the end we didn’t find the way.
Q: Is something positive to have the same base from past years?
A: I believe that yes, because to know each other and to have a complement with the new players is always good. Every team needs a base and we have kept that within the last years, so I think it’s noticed.
