Riki started the liga season sited on the bench, now the last Pichichi of Depor is hoping to regain his place at Lotina’s starting squad, and also wants to break his mark of goals scored at Primera División.

For many people it was a surprise to see Iván Sánchez Rico ‘Riki’ sited on the bench for the past match against Real Zaragoza; after all he was the Pichichi of the team during the past season as he scored eight goals in liga, which was also a personal mark for him, and he even was the best scorer of the team during the last pre-season (three goals).

Riki himself was surprised with his absence from the starting eleven that faced Los Maños, as he confessed to Sportpaper AS, ”I was fine on the pre-season; I scored my goals and had more continuity, as Lassad and Adrian were injured. They only played a few games and perhaps, as I had had more minutes in the summer, I didn’t expect this, but Lotina is the one who decides and I must seize my chances. These situations are part of football.”

Questioned about the lack of goals and the desired top-scorer hardly waited by Lotina, the Madrilenian attacker said that, "The club wanted to bring a striker of other characteristics, but failed and now we have to pull forward. People want a striker of fifteen goals per season, but those players are expensive and difficult to find. For those of us on here we like to play and score the goals. We are very confident about our chances and if we continue this way, I’m sure that, eventually, the goals will come.”

The ex-Getafe man is conscious of his solid season during the past year, as he scored eight times despite the continuous injuries, “Hopefully I can overcome my record, that's my goal. I made eight, although I missed twelve games due the injuries. I think it’s something to be happy, but I'm looking to beat my own mark, it’s the same every year."

Finally, and in a collective sense, he is positive and hopes to repeat the first round of the season 2009/10, “Why can’t we start so well and repeat the beginning of one year ago? Our last first round was nearly of Champions League, and the second round was one to forget. Three years ago it was the opposite. We started falling and we ended qualified for Europe. We should be more regular. The signings will help us, because now we are more vertical, faster and more competitive.”
