THE NUMBERS OF LOPO

08 Sep 2010
Central defender Lopo is considered as the heart of Depor’s defense, but he has a dark past as he was considered as one of the toughest players in la liga. Now Catalan is trying to leave in the past his numbers as a violent defender.

Just few seconds after the kick-off in liga against Real Zaragoza, Deportivo was committing its first foul of the season, and it wasn’t a surprise to see that the offender was Albert Lopo, who is considered as the leader of the defence and the first one that puts the leg in order to intimidate the rival. Nobody doubts of his solidity as a defender, but the shadow of the past still chasing him as he was considered as a violent player.

This is his thirteen seasons at Primera División and is currently the active player, alongside Aitor Ocio from Athletic Bilbao and Puñal from Osasuna, with more red cards in la liga (10). Historically Lopo is twelfth in terms of red cards in la liga, a list led by Pablo Alfaro and Aguado with 18 expulsions.

The Catalan is also the third active players with more yellow cards (111), just behind David Albelda from Valencia and Puñal from Osasuna. Historically, he is seventh in terms of yellow cards, just surpassed by Fernando Hierro (147), Albelda, Baraja, Míchel Salgado, Santi Denia and Aguado

However, in recent seasons the player is trying to correct his behavior, and actually he was sent off in only two opportunities since his arrival to Depor; also to say that the 60% of his yellow cards were shown during his career at Espanyol.

The red cards that he saw at Depor took place in matches that were near to end, first in the derby against Celta of the season 2006/07 as he was sent off with two yellow cards at minute 89, and the other was on the past season as the Catalan was sent off at minute 90 during the protested visit to Sporting Gijón and after he complained of a penalty whistled by referee Rubinos Pérez.

The same Lopo says that he already changed and that the excessive number of cards was a product of his inexperience, "Those days of madness are over. Many cards were shown by the impetus of a young player. And the evil character you might show in a football pitch may have exceeded me, so it was normal to see me sent off or seeing too many yellow cards.”'
