Deportivo ended the past liga season suffering six straight defeats playing outside of the Riazor, that’s the worst mark for the club within the last thirty-eight years. Besides, the team hasn’t won’t yet any away match in liga during the present year.

One of the reasons that explains Depor’s poor second round on the past liga edition was the behavior of the team playing outside home, and it’s that Lotina’s men doesn’t win an away game in liga since November 29th, 2009 (1-0 at Racing Santander, matchday 12 season 2009/10). Since that day Depor played thirteen away matches in the competition and it was only able to pick up four draws and scoring only five goals.

Actually, the team ended the liga season with six straight defeats playing outside of the Riazor: 1-2 at Sporting Gijón (matchday 28), 0-3 at Atletico Madrid (matchday 30), 0-3 at Barcelona (matchday 32), 0-1 at Valencia (matchday 34), 1-3 at Osasuna (matchday 36) and 0-2 at Athletic Bilbao (matchday 38). That’s the worst mark since the year 1972, moment when Deportivo lost eight straight away matches between matchday 22 of the season 71/72 and matchday 03 of the campaign 72/73.

However, the Sánchez Pizjuán has a double positive meaning for Deportivo; firstly because it was the last liga visit in which Depor added a point, it was during the 1-1 on matchday 26, which was also considered by the media as the last important performance of the team during the past season.

The second is the fact that the Sánchez Pizjuán was the last stadium that witnessed an away victory for Deportivo during an official game; it was on January 27th, 2010 as Depor defeated Sevilla in the second-leg of the quarterfinals of Copa Del Rey, though the result wasn’t enough to allow the qualification of the Galician team to semi-finals.

Also, that win in Sevilla was one of the two lonely victories that Deportivo has conquered playing away from the Riazor during the year 2010, the other was the 2-1 success at Mestalla for Copa del Rey (January 6). Now Depor will try to break this ‘witchcraft’, and it won’t be easy as it will be facing one of the candidates for the Champions League positions.
