NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR MANU

10 Sep 2010
Lotina already announced that Manu will be the starting keeper against Sevilla FC, this since Aranzubia is just coming out from his shoulder injury. The Asturian welcomes the opportunity and hopes to respond as he did against Zaragoza.

Daniel Aranzubia is normally training since Wednesday after finally surpassing the shoulder problem that kept him at bay during the pre-season stage, but Sunday’s game against Sevilla FC is too soon for him and coach Lotina already announced that in the best of the cases the Basque goalie will be sited on the bench.

This means that Manuel Fernández Muñiz ‘Manu’ will have a new chance at Depor’s goal; the Asturian was the starting keeper during the whole pre-season and also during the opening matchday against Zaragoza. Despite clinching the clean sheet against Los Maños the fans still have doubts on him as the ex-Sporting goalie doesn’t transmit the same sense of security than Aranzubia.

But Manu believes that this is a great opportunity for him, as he told to newspaper La Voz de Galicia, ”If the coach isn’t hurried to put him (Aranzubia) at the starting eleven and decides to count with me, then I am enchanted. This is good in order to gain minutes and keep evolving, it’s always helpful. If Lotina doesn’t have doubts on me and if in this way Aranzubia is able to keep evolving, then we all are winners.”

And it should be a busy game for him, as Manu will have to face the trio composed by Luis Fabiano, Kanouté, and Negredo, “In the beginning it seems I will have a lot of work, especially since we are playing at their stadium. They had problems in the Supercopa and the previous round of the Champions League, but that is just forcing them to earn the prestige at home; they will try to demonstrate that the team still aspiring to everything.”

Also, Manu is aware that this is a golden chance for him since there’s a big competence inside the team with the presence of Felipe Ramos and Diego Rivas from Fabril, ”We will always have competence, not only with Dani, but also with the keepers pushing up at Fabril. It isn’t something negative, actually it’s quite good since it motivates me to keep fighting for a spot.”

Finally, the Asturian goalkeeper isn’t too worried as this is his last year of contract at Deportivo, “Right now I don’t want to be focused on it, right now I am only interested in playing and claiming a place as a professional keeper, though it’s also true that I will like to stay at Deportivo for some more years.”
