THE RAISING OF MANU

15 Sep 2010
Suddenly Manu is calling the attention of the media in Spain, this after his great performance against Sevilla. And it’s that the Asturian and Iker Casillas are the only two keepers a Primera that haven’t allowed a goal yet.

It seems that Manuel Fernandez ‘Manu’ has erased all the doubts that that fans had on him and all in a stroke of a pen. The shoulder injury of Daniel Aranzubia opened a door to him during the pre-season, but the ex-Sporting never convinced the public due to some errors committed in the pre-season matches.

Then he was the starting keeper in the opening day against Zaragoza, and despite Depor clinched the first clean sheet of the season the keeper left some doubts as in some plays he seemed insecure at the moment of going out for the ball. Manu showed the same weaknesses against Sevilla, but this time it was different as he also made eight key saves that helped Depor to add a point at the Sánchez Pizjuán.

After the game the Asturian goalkeeper was in all the Sportpapers, not only from Galicia, but also of Madrid. And it’s that he and Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas are the only Primera goalies that haven’t leaked a goal after the first two matchdays. On Monday he even was requested to give a press conference at Abegondo after the first training of the week.

Despite his meteoric rise, Manu was keeping both feet on the ground, “"I need more games like this. It is my second season and I haven’t won anything yet. I have to continue growing and as more games I can play, the better for tomorrow, and when I commit a mistake people won’t judge me as before"

The media was also questioning what will happen when Aranzubia will be fit enough to return, and Manu just said that he is happy and that his relationship with the Basque is wonderful, ”Dani sent me a message after the match. He’s always nice with me and my relation with him is very solid, spectacular I should day; it would surprise everyone.”
