PREVIEW: VILLARREAL – DEPORTIVO (LIGA)

23 Sep 2010
Two different approaches for the game as Lotina is making rotations at the starting squad, while Garrido will not change anything despite the busy calendar. The big novelty at Depor is the presence of Fabril’s Dioni in the list for the match.

STATISTICS: FOUR DRAWS IN A ROW?
Deportivo has only clinched four straight draws in liga in one opportunity, this after 39 seasons at Primera División; it occurred within matchdays 7 & 11 on the season 1998/99: 1-1 at Tenerife, 1-1 Vs Mallorca, 1-1 at Atletico Madrid and 2-2 Vs Alavés. And twelve years later Depor could be repeating the mark after the goalless draws against Zaragoza & Sevilla plus the 2-2 with Getafe.

But it won’t an easy task to conquer a positive result at El Madrigal, because the Valencian team has won nine of the last ten liga encounters disputed at home. Besides, Lotina’s team has lost in the last three visits there: 3-4 (2007/08); 0-1 (2008/09) and 0-1 (2009/10).

An interesting stat is that Villarreal is only three goals away from the mark of 600 goals at Primera División, currently they represent the fourth best offensive line in la liga with six goals in three matches, only surpassed by Malaga, Getafe and Atletico Madrid (the three of them with seven).  Meanwhile, Depor has already scored 1,853 goals at the elite of Spanish football.

DEPORTIVO: ROTATIONS
Coach Miguel Ángel Lotina already confirmed that he’s making changes in all the lines of his starting lineup, this in order to avoid further complications with the injuries. The main novelty on the list of the squad traveling to Vila-real is the presence of Fabril’s striker Dionisio Emanuel Villalba ‘Dioni’, he’s replacing Riki, who’s injured and out for three weeks. It’s the second Fabril’s player picked for an official game during the present liga season –the other one is keeper Felipe Ramos-, though the Andalusian, who’s 20, already played with the first team on the pre-season and even scored a goal against Cardiff City.

Lotina himself said that he hasn’t decided yet the starting lineup that will play at El Madrigal, but at least four modifications are expected. Manuel Fernandez Muñiz ‘Manu’ will continue at the goal, and the first change appear with the presence of Laureano Sanabria ‘Laure’ at the right-back position; meanwhile Paraguayan Claudio Morel will continue on the left sector.

At the centre, Diego Colotto and Albert Lopo will continue to compose the heart of the defence; it will be the match number 300 for the Catalan at Primera División, only other twelve active players can presume of having a bigger number, including the cases of ex-Depor Sergio (405) and Valerón (377).

The big doubt is at midfield, Ruben Pérez has impressed with his two matches against Sevilla and Getafe, but Lotina has the option to play with a more defensive couple: Juca-Juan Rodriguez. What seems clear is that Antonio Tomás will be one of the players that will rest.

Lassad Nouioui and Yves Desmarets also impressed against Getafe as both entered as replacements, now Lotina will award them with a chance at the starting eleven, all appoints that the French will be the right winger and the Tunisian would perform as the playmaker in the formation. Finally, Guardado is staying at the left wing and Adrian at the centre of the attack.

Another novelty is the return of Saul Fernandez to the list of picked players after sidelined in the previous two liga meetings, but who remains out is Norwegian Knut Olav Rindarøy. He, Valerón and central defender Aythami Artiles are the three discards due to tactical reasons. The absence of Valerón seems more related to the new role of Lassad as a playmaker, while Ze Castro is also returning and now claiming the place of Aythami as the third central defender of Lotina.

Meanwhile the injury room is now busier as Michel, Riki, Pablo Alvarez and Urreta have joined Juan Dominguez. Finally, Aranzubia wasn’t picked although he is already recovered from his shoulder injury case, all because the doctors don’t want to take more risks with him.

Desmarets was commenting the fact that he will play on the right wing, just when he is more used to perform on the left, “I don’t care; I can play as a playmaker or even as a striker, and also feel comfortable at both wings. Actually I feel fine as long as I am on the pitch.”

Same was the speech of Lassad, who for Lotina is now more a playmaker than a striker, “I can play at both positions, as a playmaker or as a forward, I feel fine at both positions. I can only tell you that I feel content when I am on the pitch.”

List of picked players (18): Manu, Felipe Ramos (goalkeepers); Laure, Manuel Pablo, Lopo, Zé Castro, Colotto, Morel (defenders); Antonio Tomás, Juca, Juan Rodríguez, Rubén Pérez, Guardado, Desmarets, Saúl (midfielders); Adrián, Lassad and Dioni (strikers).

VILLARREAL: THE POWER OF EL MADRIGAL
Definitely the ‘Yellow Submarine’ is a very different team when it plays at home, and it’s that Villarreal has won nine of the last ten liga matches disputed at El Madrigal, while on the past season they only won three times away from home, actually last weekend’s win at Levante (1-2) was their first away triumph since the 2-1 win at Racing Santander back on April.

That’s the key for coach Juan Carlos Garrido, he wants to end among the top six places and knows that for that goal it is necessary to clinch the major part of the points disputed at home. The Valencian coach is also thinking that a good way to help to the cause is to avoid the rotations, at least at this stage of the season, that’s why he has planned to repeat the same 4-4-2 formation that conquered the three points against Levante.

Galician Diego López will be at the goal, he is completing his match number 100 at Primera wearing Villarreal’s shirt. Ex-Celta Angel Lopez will cover the right-back position, while former Depor defender Joan Capdevila will perform on the left side of the defence. The couple of centre backs will be composed by Argentine Mateo Musacchio and ex-Valencia Carlos Marchena.

Midfield will be territory for Bruno Soriano and Marcos Senna, ex-Mallorca BorjaValero will attack from the right wing and Santiago Cazorla, who already surpassed last season’s long-term injury, will perform on the left flank. Final the couple on attack will be composed by Italian Giuseppe Rossi and Brazilian Nilmar Da Slva,

It is a very dangerous couple, as Nilmar is one of the four men that have scored three goals after the first three matchdays, and his tally rises to five taking in mind the two goals that he already conquered in the Europa League, and without forgetting that Rossi already scored twice on this liga season. Actually, this is the most prolific combination at Primera División as combined these two men have represented five of the six goals conquered by Villarreal on the liga campaign.

Garrido won’t reveal the list of picked players until Thursday, but it is expected to see the presence of Ecuadorian Jefferson Montero, the 21-year-old striker has only played 62 minutes within the first three matches in liga, but it was enough to impress the fans. He was commenting his presence on this start of season, "They are given me opportunities and I intend to seize these minutes. It is very difficult to play in this team, because there are players of great quality. I'm just starting, and I have a long way to match players like Cazorla or Valero"
