Deportivo will face a Primera rival in its debut in Copa Del Rey: Osasuna. The first-leg will take place on October 27 at Reyno de Navarra, and two week later Los Rojillos will visit the Riazor.

It will be a familiar face for coach Miguel Angel Lotina as the Basque man coached Osasuna between the years 1999 & 2002. The draw in Copa Del Rey took place on Wednesday; the clubs that are disputing European competitions were awarded with the option to face the seven clubs that have survived from Tercera and Segunda B.

Meanwhile, the four teams surviving from Segunda A (Betis, Xérez, Córdoba and Alcorcón) are facing Primera clubs, Depor had the chance to face any of them, but in the end the draw indicated that the Galicians will face Osasuna in one of the five series between Primera clubs. The first-leg will take place on October 27 at Reyno de Navarra, and the final-leg will be disputed at the Riazor on November 10. Curiously, before the series in Copa, Depor will host Osasuna in liga, just ten days before the first-leg (October 17).

Depor’s coach didn’t talk of the meeting with Osasuna, because the draw in Copa took place when the team was flying to Vila-real, but Osasuna’s manager, Jose Antonio Camacho, commented the result of the draw, ”We will face a Primera rival and that’s always difficult, and I think the series will be defined in La Coruña. I would have loved to face an inferior rival, but we always were unlucky on this. It’s true we will face them before in liga, and it could be a reference, but often the games in Copa have nothing to do with the matches in liga.”

It will be the eighth time in which Deportivo faces Osasuna for Copa Del Rey; the Galicians have the advantage in the series with five triumphs against two for Los Rojillos. The first confrontation between these two teams on this competition took place on the season 1932/33 and Depor won with an aggregate score of 7-5 (second round).

For the season 1947/48 the confrontation was repeated though it was only a one-match series, and Depor won the game with a 5-2 score (first round). Then Osasuna eliminated Deportivo during the season 1955/56, the aggregate score was 6-3 (first round).

The farthest round in which these two clubs have collided was the sixth round of the season 1991/92; in this occasion Depor defeated Osasuna in the penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw in the aggregate score, Depor won the penalty shootout (5-3) and was later eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the semifinals. For the 1997/98 campaign Depor faced again Osasuna and again passed the round through a 3-1 aggregate score (fourth round).

Then the second success of Osasuna came on the season 1999/2000 (last-32 round), it was through a 2-0 aggregate score and the curious thing was that Lotina was the coach of the Navarrans, while Javier Irureta was the manager of Deportivo, just in the season in which the Galicians won la liga. The last meeting between these two clubs in Copa came on the season 2005/06, again in the last-32 round, and this time Deportivo achieved its fifth triumph over Osasuna with a 4-2 aggregate score.

The last-32 round in Copa Del Rey:

Logroñés – Valencia
Ceuta – Barcelona FC
Poli Ejido – Villarreal
Universidad Las Palmas – Atlético Madrid
Portugalete – Getafe
