THE WORST YEAR IN TWO DECADES

Taking in mind the current situation of Deportivo it’s pretty easy to find all kind of negative stats; maybe the most revealing one is the fact that 2010 has been the worst year of Depor since the last promotion. This for the points added and the goals scored.

For the first time since the 1970’s Deportivo is the last place in la liga, some people say that there’s no reason to panic as only six matchdays have been played on the Primera season, but the true is that the current downward spiral isn’t new and it actually started with the year 2010, something that can’t be interpreted as an accident as the year is about to end.

And it’s that, since January, Depor has played thirty matches and the balance is terrible: only five wins, eight draws and seventeen defeats; which means nineteen points. Besides, the team has only scored nineteen goals for a poor average of 0.63 goals per match. Both are the worst numbers of Deportivo since the last promotion to Primera División (season 1991/92).

Both are also the worst marks among the seventeen clubs that have played the whole year at Primera División. Far and away are the years when Depor was fighting for the titles and adding 79 points in one single year (2003) or scoring 77 goals in just twelve months (2001).  These last two marks are record seasons for the club.

It also calls the attention the horrific record playing far from home as Deportivo doesn’t win an away match since November of 2009 (0-1 at Racing Santander), without forgetting the fact that since that day the Galicians have played sixteen games away from the Riazor only scoring five misery goals. Without doubt Lotina and his players have to change a lot of things if they don’t want to face big problems at the end of the season.
